About this granth
The Baudhayana Dharmasutra (बौधायन-धर्मसूत्रम्) belongs to the Kalpasutra of the Baudhayana school of the Taittiriya branch of the Black Yajurveda and is among the oldest dharmasutras. Its four prashnas give rules on the sources of dharma, regional customs, the duties of the varnas and ashramas, studentship, marriage, purity, food, penances, inheritance, kingship and renunciation.
A single rule shows its directness: listing the eight forms of marriage, it states that the fifth, the gandharva, is for vaishyas and the eighth, the paishacha, for shudras. Such passages make the work a basic source for historians of Indian law and society.
This edition is number 104 of the Kashi Sanskrit Granthamala. It gives the sutras with the Sanskrit commentary Vivarana of Govindasvamin, notes by Mahamahopadhyaya A. Chinnaswami Shastri and a Hindi explanation by Dr. Umesh Chandra Pandey. It is published by Chaukhambha Prakashan, Varanasi, and has 486 pages.
