20 MĀNASĀBA
26. Like शास्त्रवित्, शिल्पवित् would be the more usual form.
27. J. पूर्वादि ।
28. B. मतंद्वितः for त्यजेत्ततः ।
The word बिन्दु is usualy masculine; the correct form should,
therefore, be बिन्दुम् ।
29–30. I. reads छायया after षड्, and it is preceded by चायाम
which implies almost the same idea as छायया । Though the mean-
ing of the verse is more or less obscure, the reading चाधिक्य in place of
छायया, suggested by J. and other Mss., is preferable.
(1) J. शन त्रव, A. F. नवम for त्रप ।
The first portion of line 30 is taken from J. in place of which I.
reads तस्यां नवनवच्छायां, which does not seem to be a better reading. The
further justification of reading त्रपच्छाया here lies in the fact that the
details of त्रपच्छाया are described in the lines immediately following.
(2) I. J. प्राचीन, A. F. प्राची for प्राचीं suggested by B.
31. I. यह, J. प्रव for त्रप ।
36. I. A. F. दक्षेचोक्ता, J. दक्षिचोक्ता, B. दक्षेचैका, for दक्षिणे चोक्ता sug-
gested by the other Mss.
37. I. यत्सूत्रं, B. तयाशुद्धं for यच्छुद्धं suggested by J. A. F.
38. I. चोत्तरतो दिशि for दक्षिणतो भवेत्, and leaves out the next
line, which is necessary.
39. J. reads छायाटोत्तरे, which is apparently a mistake for चोत्तरतो,
due to the carelessness of the copyist.
41. (1) I. A. F. नित्या for नीत्वा suggested by J. B. (2) I. दाने for
धामा suggested by J.
42. (1) I. भवद्वययन् for त्रपच्छायां । (2) I. शिखि ।
A. leaves out the next two lines 43, 44.
48. (1) B. F. नौथौं for नीत्वा । (2) J. तात्परतो, I. चोत्तरता for चोत्तरतो ।

CRITICAL NOTES : CHAPTER VI 21

for the last word.
49. (1) I. युश्च धान, B. अवताया, A. F. युष्ट···च्छाया for यपरूच्छायां
suggested by J. (2) A. F. रोचते ।
50. (1) The ungrammatical combination, प्रथमे पङ्कौ, should be
noticed. (2) J. विवर्जयेत्, which form is more usually used to express the
sense.
A. F. omit the next 6 lines.
51. (1) I. मध्यदेशे दिनं । (2) J. चान्य, B. चांन्य । (3) I. अङ्गुली ।
53. (1) I. has a lacuna after चै । (2) B. दशकं । (3) J. त्यज्यक्वायपङ्कया
54. (1) J. दिवसे दशके । (2) B. सं for त्वङ् ।

60. (1) A. F. वर्जौ for पङ्कौ । (2) B. नवां for विना ।
62. A. F. वर्जौ for पङ्कौ । For द्वयाङ्गुल compare the form त्रयाङ्गुल
under line 20, chapter V. The mistake is often repeated.
64. B. पाद for वेद ।
67. A. F. चांगुलं द्वयङ्गुलं ।
68. A. F. विसर्जयेत्, B. त्यजेत् ।
70. I. J. भवेत् for बुधः suggested by the other Mss.
72. B. कुंमादौ ।

22 MĀNASĀRA
In place of lines 58 to 76 J. reads the following :—
77. (1) I. अवद्छादा for अपच्छाया(यां) suggested by J. and other Mss.
(2) I. तन्त तासि for तत्र नास्ति suggested by J. and other Mss.
78. (1) A. F. रविकाम्यां, B. वनूरस्सां, J. मधराश्यां । (2) A. B. F. J. च
for तु । (3) J. वृषहस्तितम् for वृषभस्थितम् ।
79. (1) B. वृक्ष विमेधकः । (2) I. has a lacuna between ऋक्ष and भवेत्
and leaves out यदि ।
80. A. F. add शङ्का after उक्त; B. omits तत्र ।
I. omits the next three lines, of which the first two (81, 82) have
been preserved by J. B. D. A. F., and the last by all these Mss.,
except J. These lines (81, 82, 83) refer to a further modification of
the rules regarding the calculation of shadow; but they have been
altogether left out by the codex architypus : they are, therefore, inclu-
ded within square brackets to indicate their doubtful validity.
81. A. F. राश्यानितर ।

CRITICAL NOTES : CHAPTER VI 23
83. J. omits this line. B. प्रसारयेत् and after this B. adds एवं कृते फलं
इति श(शं)कुस्थापनप्राचीन लक्षं, and then omits
the next eight lines.
84. (1) A. F. पैशान्य। (2) J. अथो for यथो।
85. J. विन्धो for बिन्दो।
86. (1) J. विन्धो for बिन्दो। (2) J. ईशान्य for ईश। (3) J. सूत्रयेत् for
87. J. यार्तिकामस्यकारेण, A. C. F. मुक्तिकामं ङकारेण।
88. (1) J. प्राचि। (2) J. संमतम्, I. धर्मताम्।
89. (1) J. आग्नेयेत्, A. F आग्नये। (2) J. प्राचि।
90. J. वस्तु।
91. A. F. J. सुप्तार्थे for सुगाढं।
92. J. मानणसं, A. F. मानससूत्रादि।

both the places.

J. A. F. मिति, B. हि for होति।
97. A. समादि, F. मतस्य वि for इन्द्रादि।
98. J. इन्द्रादि चाग्नि।
99. (1) A. B. F. J. सौम्या दिवा। (2) J. युगान्तकम्, which seems better
than the last phrase of the line.
100. J. परिस्तरेत्।
102. I. मनयेत् for मानयेत्।
103. J. हस्ते माधिकत्वमाम्।
104. एकं for एवं, which seems to be the correct reading.
105. I. कन्यैः for कर्णैः।
106. A. F. निष्टम।
107. A. F. षटुं, B. वखअ शत for चतुःशङ्कं।
108. A. F. अभोर्यकं, B. विध्यंतकं for महार्थकं।
B. omits the next four lines.

24 MĀNASĀRA
109. A. F. चारिमेदं च मधुकौ, J. मोदं (मोदाख्यः is a name of the mango
tree ; मेदस् is also the name of a plant).
111. A. F. J. पञ्च apparently for पङ्कि meaning ten, but this or
the other reading पञ्चति given in the text, does not give any sense;
apparently it is intended for पञ्चविंशति ।
112. (1) A. F. J. B. मात्रं for मानं । (2) हवम् for हकम् ।
113. (1) B. तमालाग्र, J. मूलादग्र । (2) A. F. क्षय...
114. (1) I. कन्तुभौ for काङ्गुभौ suggested by J. (2) A. F. प्रभौ for शुभौ ।
115. A. F. J. लाक्षि for क्षेष्ट् ।
116. J. संख्याश्च ।
118. (1) B. समंतात्, I. समरं, A. F. समर्चा for समञ्ज्या sugested by J.
(2) J. तदा for ततः ।
120. I. प्रभावयेत् for प्रहारयेत् suggested by J.
Colophon :-B. reads सप्तमो for षष्ठ।

CRITICAL NOTES 25
CHAPTER VII
2. I. has a lacuna in place of पदं। The unusual form नामम्
should be noticed; but this form is not uniformly used : see for instance
lines 3, 4.
3. पैशाच is read as पेकच (IX 422) also in tho mayamata (VII
1, 8, 23), which appears to be a better reading because पैशाच is the
name of one of the several rounds into which a whole plan is fnther
subdivided, the others being Daiva and Mānusha, etc.
B. omits the lines 5, 6, and 7.
7. I. reads, in place of this line,
The complete line is taken from J. and other Mss.
8. (1) I. सप्तमा। (2) I. स्त for खण्डितं।
10. (1) I. पदमेकादशोति; compare the Brihat-Saṁhitā, LIII, 42 f.
(2) A. F. शायिकं, B. परवंशकमोरितं।
11. B. चासनं मानमोरितं।
Here the square of eleven
is intended, and it should be 11²=121; the emendation follows J.
13. J. चाध्ये, A. B. F. चाद्यो, I. चाद्यौ। The unusual form नामं (see
lines 2, 11) should be noticed.
14. The number intended to be expressed in this line is 144, the
square of 12. I. J. सपञ्चाशदष्टं for सचत्वारिंशदेवं। The twelfth plot is
named देशोय (in the Mayamata, VII 3, 11), which is a synonym of
16 A. B. F. मेकं for मेवं।
17. B. पदं, A. F. J. दशमिति for शतम्।
19. J. विंशतिका, A. B. F. विंशतिवा for विंशपदा, J.'s reading is better
as it avoids the repetition of पद।
20. (1) B. नाम सिंहासनं। (2) I. J. यधियोडकात्तथा for अथ षोडशकं तथा
suggested by the other Mss.

Wait, "रप्ततो" or "सप्ततो"?
Look at the first letter of "रप्ततो":
Wait, is it 'र' or 'स'?
Look at line 17: "31. (1) I. रप्ततो" or "सप्ततो"?
Wait! Look at the letter:
It has a curved top, slants down: wait, is it 'र' or 'स'?
Wait, look at 'स' in "सुप्रति": 'स' has a loop/hook on the left and a connecting bar to the right stem!
In "रप्ततो", does it have a connecting bar?
No, it's just 'र'! Wait, or 'स' broken? But it really looks like 'र': "रप्ततो".
Wait, could it be "रप्ततो"? Yes, critical apparatus records manuscript errors: "I. रप्ततो for सुप्रति suggested by J."

CRITICAL NOTES : CHAPTER VII 27
41. (1) I. षष्टविष्ट । (2) I. reads मासिक apparently for माधिक as in
J. which is meant for अधिक ।
42. (1) I. J. शीति for शत । (2) I. विंशाल ।
43. B. विश्वाविंश for नवविंशत्; the usual form is, however, ऊनत्रिंशत् ।
44. I. J. षष्टादश for षष्टशत; the emendation needs no explanation
as the number required must be 800; see notes under 12 and 14 above.
45. I. न...सं for तत्र त्रिं suggested by J.
46. J. विधानकम् ।
The improved reading, retained in
the text, is suggested by B.
48. (1) J. कात्त for कान्त । (2) J. त्रिंशच्च ।
49. I. J. सङ्कभू for सङ्ख suggested by the other Mss.
50. The last plan is named इन्द्रकान्त in the Mayamata (VII 7, 21,
29), which does not seen to be a better reading. B. adds, between
51. (1) B. मेवपदं । (2) Notice the form सत्रम, which is apparently
meant for सूत्रेण ।
52. B. सूर्यं for सूत्रम् ।
53. (1) J. जलेशा, B. जलेशास्य, which is more grammatical. (2) I.
पर....म, B. पाकरम्, J. पावहृम् for क्ष्याहर suggested by the other Mss.
54. B. च for वा ।
55. (1) I. यदिनाम ।
(2) I. दपि for यापि suggested by J. and other Mss.
56. I. पत्नै for पैतु suggested by J. and other Mss.
58. (1) B. चैशपदं, I. पद ।
(3) The form साप्त is untenable; it must be either साप्त्यं or
59. B. D. omit lines 59 and 60, and have instead the following :—

28 MĀNASĀRA
The reading of B. D. is very corrupt. But the above lines supply a
clue to a very important passage left out by the other Mss. From the
contents of lines 51 to 56, the general description of the thirty-two plans
outlined by thirty-two technical names in lines 2 to 50 can be followed.
But all the Mss., except B. D., have left out the description of the
third plan called पीठ; they do not give a full description of the second
plan, called पैशाच, either. This fact may induce one to recover the
missing passage from B. D. and retain it in the text, but the passage
in B. D. is hopelessly corrupt. In place of these line the Mayamata
which is a summary of the Mānasāra reads the following....
60. (1) J. गृह । (2) J. पूजार्थः । (3) It is not clear whether the second
half is intended to convey the sense of जनस्य स्नपनार्थकं । See B. D.'s
reading under note 59 above.
62. (1) J. देश । (2) शादाणवः does not seem to be the name of a god;
the next word भार्यक is certainly such a name. In the next two lines
(63, 64) six such names are given; and in this line there must be two
names to make the number eight. See note under Translation.
63. A. F. विवश्वां ।
64. I. भूदनं, A. F. दरं for घरं ।
B. D. omit the next four lines, 65 to 68.
65. J. सूत्रैः ।
66. J. वशूश, A. F. वमशं ।
Between lines 68 and 69, there seem to be some line or lines miss-
ing, wherein should be described the location of भल्लन् in the plan,
उपपीठ, mention of which is made in line 70.
67. I. J. सुग्रोवकं for सुग्रोवकौ suggested by A. F.
68. A. चोषं, F. शेषं, J. घोषं च, I. षोडश ।
69. (1) I. पञ्चमन्यल्यत् । (2) A. F. शत्वा, I. श्पैशात्तु for चैशात्तु (from the
north-east).

CRITICAL NOTES : CHAPTER VII 29
70. After the description of the 5th plan, called उपपीठ, we would
naturally expect the descriptions of the 6th (उपपोठ), 7th (खण्डिल), 8th
(चण्डित), 9th (परमशायिक) plans, etc. in order. But the descriptions of
the 6th and 7th plans seem to be missing.
71. (1) I. इवमें for सर्वे suggested by J. and the other Mss. (2) A. F.
have got a lacuna for पदेषु ।
73. J. निष्फलं ।
74. It is not quite plain as to why these two plans were preferred
by the ancient architects (see note under 154).
75. (1) This line apparently should be read after line 154. See
note under 154.
(2) पदस्थितानां सर्वेषां seems to be the proper construction.
78. I. शून्य for शून, suggested by J. and the other Mss.
79. (1) J. चाष्टै, A. F. चासै । (2) A. F. मानकं for नामकम् ।
81. (1) I. युक्तमान्तं for दुत्तरान्तं, suggested by J. and the other Mss.
(2) I. पश्चात्पूर्वान्तान्तिकम् for पूर्वादिपश्चिमान्तकम्, suggested by J.
and the other Mss.
82. A. F. कंठ for कण्टे ।
83. I. कण्ठे for कण्टे, suggested by J. and the other Mss.
84. (1) J. चापञ्च चापवतश्च । (2) A. F. चापत्यध्यर्धं बोध्यकातं ।
85. (1) I. इ' for अं in both the places; the suggestion of J., which
is retained in the text, is supported by later references. (2) A. F. ध्यध्यं ।
86. (1) I. भाजं च for राजं suggested by J. and supported by later
reference.
(3) I. चर्थ, A. F. ष्य for चर्घ । (4) A. F. मरा for पराः ।
87. (1) I. चर्यार्थं, A. F. पराः अध्यैर्य । (2) I. मोगिना for मोगिनः ।
88. I. अष्टमना प्रोक्त ।
89. A. F. न्युपुषा, J. पूर्वनिन्के for पूषाग्निकोशके ।
90. (1) J. मृग the other Mss. मृपक्ष, but the correct reading is पिता
who is missing, while भृश and मृग are mentioned in their proper places
(see lines 102, 105) । (2) I. दौवानिक for दौवारिक ।

30 MĀNASĀRA
91. (1) I. रागं The required reading seems to be वायु and नाग ।
which are missing from this list of deities, but are included both
under the ninth plan (lines 129, 149) and the general description (lines
10, 237); these emendations are supported by the Mayamata (VII.
36), and the Silparatna (VI. 39). (2) A. F. ध्यार्घ, I. चार्घाधं, J. चार्थ ।
92. J. चतुष्क ।
(2) A. C. F. रिक्षैक । (3)
J. पूरे ।
94. (1) A. F. J. विदघश्चैक । (2) A. F. लवे for पदे ।
95. J. गेगैक, A. F. कगैक ।
96. A. F. वैवस्वत पदं मुख्य, I. पदद्युम्नास्य for पदे मुख्य, suggested by J.
97. I. पूर्वेदीनक, other Mss.
99. I. सत्यपि, J. सत्यपी and the other Mss. (2) I.
J. तस्माद् for तस्य ।
101. A. F. मध्यमे for पश्चिमे ।
102. A. F. J. मृत for मृश ।
103. (1) A. F. वह, J. बह्न । (2) I. J. स्थिता ।
107. (1) I. चिरशी for चरकी, suggested by J. and also found in the
Bṛihat-Saṁhitā, LIII, 83. (2) A. F. J.
108. (1) I. ऋतनैः, J. भूतनेः for पूतना suggested by the Bṛihat-
Saṁhitā, LIII, 83.
(2) The repetition of बहिः and the use of बाह्ये in the same
sense should be noticed.
109. (1) A. F. leave पाप in a lacuna; J. omits कोण प्र ।
(2) The contents of the three lines, 107—109, have been
condensed in the Bṛihat-Saṁhitā, LIII, 83 in one line : चरकी विदारी
110. A. F. शाङ्क ।
111. As in the line 107 we should read here विधिः ।

CRITICAL NOTES : CHAPTER VII 31
112. (1) I. तिस for रस । (2) I. मास्यका; it is read अर्यमा in the Brihat-
Samhitā; but in lines 167, 255 of our text it is clearly चार्य (दैव) । (3) J.
दैवत्समर्यक, A. F. मार्यकरक्षितिः ।
The Codex Archetypus leaves out the next two lines, 113-114,
which have been preserved by all other Mss; their presence between
112 and 115 is necessary.
114. मित्रस्यम् is another grammatically impossible form.
115. (1) I. नच, apparently for नव, in place of रस ।
116. I. विशादो, A. F. वोशादो, J. ईशादी ।
(2) The form सर्वे must be connected with either पदे or कर्णो
(most likely with the latter), both of which are in the loc. sing. सर्व is
apparently taken as a noun and the form सर्वे is used for सर्वस्मिन् in the
loc. sing. This is really a very good illustration of the ungrammatical
style of Sanskrit used in the Vāstuśāstra.
118. I. A. F. भूतर for भूधर ।
119. A. F. पादे चौये च, J. तत्पदं for पदे सौम्ये ।
120. (1) A. F. दनंमे for पूर्वे । (2) I. J. सविन्द्रकम्; the emendation,
सवित्रकः, suggested by A. C. F., is necessitated by the fact that the deity
सवित्र is described in the line immediately following.
121. A. F. पूर्वदेशोवीयें रसामिंडु ।
122. A. F. रसा ।

131. J. चेश , other Mss. for सत्यक ।

32 MĀNASĀRA
The following four lines (132-135), left out by the Codex Archetypus,
appear to be necessary between lines 131 and 136. These are supplied
by J.
132. J. जयन्तैव for जयन्तस्य ।
135. J. भ्रंशश्चैक, I. भ्रंशस्यैक ।
137. (1) A. F. पूर्व । The usual form should be पूष्णः । The sun god
पूषन् is well known. (2) I. नी for ग्नि, suggested by J.
A. F. repeat this line.
(2) The form विघातस्य in this and the following line will
further illustrate the barbarous Sanskrit.
The Codex Archetypus leaves out the next three lines, 139-141,
which have been preserved by all other Mss. and are necessary here.
143. I. गर्भ for गगन, suggested by J. A. C. F.
144. (1) I. सुग्रीवं च । (2) J. adds तु before चोत्तरे ।

which it joins with line 145 as its second half.
147. A. C. F. शोषस्यैक । The usual form is शेष ; not शोष, see line

Line 75 ( पतत्पदस्थितानां सर्वदेवानां रूपमुच्यते ) should be read bet-
ween lines 154 and 155. The points of great importance to note
are :—(i) only the 8th and 9th plans are described in detail and (ii)
the Brihat-Saṁhitā, the Mayamata and other treatises dealing with

CRITICAL NOTES : CHAPTER VII 33
the subject have described only these two sohemes. An attempt has
been made elsewhere to explain the occurrence of these two sohemes
in detail, both in the Mānasāra and the Brihat-Saṁhitā. (See the
writer's Indian Architecture, p. 162 and the note under Translation of
lines 71—75).

169. A. B. F. चार्ये, I. J. चास्पदं for चार्यवत् ।
171. (1) A. B. F. पाशकरे । (2) The peculiarity of पद्मपाशापरं
should be noticed; the sense is, however, clear: in one hand is a lotus
and in the other a net.
173. A. B. विभुजं, F. द्विविधं ।
175. I. शाङ्क for चाङ्क ।
176. As in line 118 we should read here चापवत्स्यं ; see also line

120 above, we should read सवित्र in place of समिन्द्र ।

not mentioned; as the name of a deity it sounds very unfamiliar. In
3

34 MĀNASĀRA
lines 127, 130 we see चादित्य comes between the names ईश and कृशानु ।
Here चादित्य obviously stands for च शीप्यतम् which appears to be a
confused reading for शचीपतिम् implying usually इन्द्र but here चादित्य ।
191. (1) F. omits the passage from the second half of this lineto
the first half of line 196.
(2) A. B. तथा for रथ ।

contain the name of a deity ; compare note (2) under 190 above.
200. I. याच for यक्ष्याच, suggested by A. B.
201. (1) For the four lines, 201-204, A. B. F. have only one line :
सर्वाभरणसंयुक्तं रक्तवस्त्रोत्तरीयकम् ।
(2) The second half of this line, which is missing from
all Mss., may be the passage within sqare bractats as suggested by
lines 160, 165, 175, 181, 185, 187, 192, 197, etc.
202. I. J. नि···ति for निष्क्रं ति, found in the margin but put under
interrogation. Compare note (2) under 201.

A. B. F. omit the lines 217-219.
217. महान्त is a confused reading obviously for जयन्त who comes
between पर्जन्य and महेन्द्र (see lines 132, 133, etc.).
220. (1) I. J. प्रबधार other Mss. (2) The dual in the
first half line may be explained by taking हस्तौ as understood. But in
the second half line it would be better to read वस्त्रोत्तरीयकम् ।

CRITICAL NOTES : CHAPTER VII 35

222. (1) A. B. F. नोलवर्षांत । (2) J. तक्षकं for यन्तरिक्षं ।
