About this granth
The Kena Upanishad (केनोपनिषद्) belongs to the Talavakara (Jaiminiya) Brahmana of the Samaveda and takes its name from its first word, kena, 'by whom?'. Its first two sections describe Brahman as what moves the mind, speech, breath and senses while remaining beyond their reach. The last two tell the parable of the yaksha: Agni, Vayu and Indra, proud of their powers, cannot burn or blow away a single blade of grass before a mysterious being, until Uma Haimavati reveals to Indra that it was Brahman.
This Gita Press, Gorakhpur edition (No. 68) is notable for including both of Shankaracharya's commentaries on the text, the word-by-word pada-bhashya and the argumentative vakya-bhashya, each with Hindi translation. The publisher's note explains that Shankara wrote the second to bring out the meaning through reasoning. Mantra, meaning, Sanskrit commentary and its translation are set side by side, and an index of mantras closes the volume.
The imprint records over 132,000 copies printed from Samvat 1992 onward; this is the twentieth edition of Samvat 2053.
