CRITICAL NOTES : CHAPTER II 5
28. (1) I. स्थपतिः शास्त्रसर्वज्ञयाः; the emendation suggested by all
other Mss. is unavoidably necessary in order to make the line intelligible.
(2) A. F. J. सह।
29. (1) F. दिष्टे, probably better than शास्त्रदृष्टेन, apparently for
शास्त्रादेशेन। (2) B. D. वास्तुशास्त्रं।
31. J. तौल्यभि। If नाम is not emended by नाम्न, it must be preceded
by इति धीयते apparently for चाभिधीयते।
32. (1) I. श्रितस्य, A. F. सूत्रज्ञः which is better perhaps, but the sense
is implied by the following word रेखाज्ञः। The idea contained in the
word श्रुतज्ञः which is taken from J., is also suggested by the expression
शास्त्रवित्तमः।
(2) B. D. शिल्पिशास्त्रविदुत्तमः। A. F. शिल्पिवित्तमः।
33. I. त्राश्रितज्ञः; B. D. स्मृतिज्ञः।
The emendation follows J. and other Mss.
34. (1) I. कर्म विदुश्व; J. कर्म विद्याभ्य; A.F. कर्म विदूश्च।
The emendation कर्मवित्सभ्यः, suggested by all other Mss. renders
the expression more or less intelligible.
(2) D. B. यथांथर्या; F. leaves this word in a lacuna; A. ह(च)पलश्च।
(3) A. स्युर्हलापरः।
The second half of this line presents many difficulties. If बन्धु
is read with short उ, the following words would be दया (instead of उदय)
and पर (instead of अपर, which is meaningless ) and the three words
बल, बन्धु and दया would imply some of the qualifications required of the
carpenter. And there are parallel passages to support the suggestions.
स्थपति is stated to be दृढबन्धुः in the Vāstuvidyā (I. 15), but not the तक्षक,
whose qualifications are thus described :
तक्षणात्स्थूलसूक्ष्माणां तक्षकः स तु कीर्तितः ॥
सूतककर्मज्ञो गुणी शक्तः सर्वकर्मस्वतन्त्रकः ।
गुरुभक्तः सदाहृष्टः स्थपत्याद्यनुगः सदा ॥ (Ibid. I. 18,19.)
सुशीलश्चतुरो दक्षो शास्त्रज्ञो लोभवर्जितः ।
क्षमावानस्य(वान् स्याद्) द्विजश्चैव सूत्रधारः स उच्यते ॥ (Śilpadīpaka, I. 3).
कर्मान्तिकाः स्थपतयः पुरुषा यन्त्रकोविदाः ।
तथा वर्धका(क्या)दयश्चैव मार्गिणो वृक्षतक्षकाः ॥ (Rāmāyaṇa, II. 80, 2).

6 MĀNASĀRA
For similar parallel passages from the Mahābhārata, Vāstuvidyā,
Śilpadīpaka, etc., describing the qualifications of स्थपति, वर्धकि and
सूत्रग्राहिन्, see the writer's Dictionary under Sthapati. See also the
writer's translation of the Text.
35. This line seems to be quite uncalled for here and has been
omitted by all Mss. except I. It does not seem permissible, however,
to leave it out of the text. It is, therefore, kept, and by a small emenda-
tion, as suggested within brackets, it can be explained in a way.
36. (1) I. J. A. F. लोके, the other reading within brakets is
suggested by other Mss. but the general obscurity of the line is not
removed thereby. (2) J. कुरु for गुरुम् ।
38. J. विफलं । The construction of this line as well as the preceding
three lines, and the one following, is grammatically untenable ; but the
general sense of these lines is, however, clear to some extent.
39. For शिल्पीनां see note under line 1 above. मानोपकरण without
any case ending is used for मानोपकरणम्, and would illustrate the
barbarous nature of the text.
40. (1) A. J. प्रेक्ष्य, F. प्रेक्ष्यो, B. प्रेक्ष्य । The word उद्वीक्ष्य, when it has
been combined with नयन, bearing no case ending, must be taken as an
adj. qualifying परमाणु ; it would be meaningless if it be read as a gerund
in ल्यप् form. It must, therefore, be emended either to वीक्ष्यः or वीक्ष्यम्
according to the gender of परमाणु । I. uses it in the masculine and
A. F. J. take it in the feminine. It is taken here in the neuter, and it
thus conforms to the neuter forms तत् and उदाहृतम्, this necessitates
the reading उद्वीक्ष्यं । (2) A. F. J. उदाहृता, I. उदाहृत ।
41. (1) J. षड्गुणितस्तत्र. More than a dozen authorities will be
found quoted in the writer's Dictionary under Aṅgula; it is always
eight times, not six. It is not clear how and wherefrom this reading
is taken by this Ms.
(2) A. F. J. स्मृतः, but the other adj. गुणितं has been left in the
neuter singular. That such errors are very frequent in the text will
be noticed in the following lines also.

CRITICAL NOTES : CHAPTER II 7
42. J. षड्भिर्मिलितनानं तत् विला, B. D. तापश्चाकलशाय, A. F. चांगुलं तत् ।
43. J. B. D. बोध्य; I. रक्ष or रक्षा in this line, and रिष्ट in the
following line; Suprabhedāgama (XXX. 3) reads रिक्षा; Vāstuvidyā (I. 5)
has लिक्षा (long) ; so also the Matsya-Purāṇa (258, 18) and the Sid-
dhānta-śiromaṇi (p. 52): but the Bṛihat-Saṁhitā (58, 12) has लिक्ष
(short). But from the reading रिष्टै for लिक्षै, the Mānasāra seems to
have used the short form लिक्ष; the gender of the word remains uncertain
from these uses. In dictionaries it is used in the feminine gender.
44. J. रिष्टै । For parallel passages, see notes under Translation and
the writer's Dictionary under Aṅgula.
47. A. F. यव बोहि; B. D. omit this line.
J. reads lines 42—45 between lines 47 and 48.
48. J. कनिया; कनिष्ठ must be read in the neuter singular or be com-
pounded with the following words; latter being preferable.
50. (1) I. वितस्तियुक्तं, which would not give the usual meaning;
the emendation युग्मं is suggested by J. and other Mss.
(2) अधिकम् for पथिकः is another instance of errors committed
by ignorant artists attempting to write Sanskrit. स्मृतम् in the next line
also illustrates the point.
51. हस्त is made masculine in this line, and neuter in the-
next (52).
52. I. गृहम्; the emendation ग्रहः is supported by other Mss. as
well as the Suprabhedāgama : cf. षड्विंशतिधनुर्मुष्टिः सप्तविंशत् धनु(र्)ग्रहः ।
(For context and reference see the writer's Dictionary under Aṅgula).
53. I. J. रज्जुमेय च कथ्यते for दण्ड।ष्टंरज्जुमेयच suggested by the
other Mss.
Between the lines 53 and 54, all the Mss., except I. and J., include
the line घरमान वितस्तेन मानयेच्छिल्पिवित्तमः; A. घर, B. D. रथ । But the sense
of this line seems to be expressed by the line 55; besides span would be
too small a measure for houses.
54. In याने and शयने the locative is used either for genitive as in
विमानस्य in the next line, or more properly in place of accusative.

8 MĀNASĀRA
57. The expression न मानानां is unintelligible ; without the sug-
gested emendation the line would be meaningless.
The apparent meaning would be given by an emendation like च
मानानि ; but in that case तत् and धनुर्ग्रह must be read in the instru-
mental. The same meaning can, however, be deduced if we read च
सर्वेषां in place of न मानानां ।
59. A. F. मालको, B. D. मूलकः for मालकः ।
63. (1) I. दारु for दारितं । (2) B. D. त्रिकांतं for चतुरश्रतः ।
64. I. माजीवं for मे दीर्घं ।
65. (1) A. F. I. J. मध्याङ्गुल, which does not convey a suitable sense ;
the emendation gives the apparent meaning and seems necessary.
(2) हस्तं seems a better reading.
68. मूर्ति, without a case ending cannot be used here. It is also
grammatically necessary to read मोक्ता ।
69. J. शाद for शाता, both of which are almost equally obscure.
70. J. शिशुक, which seems to be a confused reading.
72. (1) J. प्राग्वत् for पार्श्वात् । (2) I. नुग्रह for नाहकम् ।
73. B. D. वर्हि, F. वर्धि for वर्जितम् ।
75. (1) B. D. J. दैवत्यं । (2) The second portion of this line would
be too clumsy without the suggested emendation.
79. (1) I. सो स्थितो for स स्थितः । (2) J. करखकं for रेखुरं ।
80. For चतु all Mss., except I. J., read बद्धस्तु ।

CRITICAL NOTES. 9
CHAPTER III

  1. I. अस्मिन् for second यस्मिन् ।
  2. J. प्रोक्तादथ ।
  3. I. J. याज्यं for यानं ।
  4. (1) I. J. धरात् for धरा; the error seems to be due to a slip of
    pen of the copyists. (2) J. जातोनि, A. जादीनि. I. जातिहि, the emenda-
tion suggested by the other Mss. seems doubtless.
  5. J. वस्तुनि for वास्तूनि ।
By some extraordinary and most annoying confusion, which will
be seen repeated several times in the text, I. J. read, between lines 6
and 7, first, the lines 15-17 and then lines 30—31. The adjustment is
unavoidably necessary, and fortunately it is warranted by the undoubted
link of sense, and its correctness is guaranteed by the other Mss.
  6. A. प्रभां for प्रपां ।
  7. (1) I. अधिकस्य कथं शिल्पि शिल्पिका चारितं तथा ।
    J. अधिक-स्यन्दनं शिल्पौ शिबिकाचार्यं तथा ।
Neither of these readings bears any sense. The emendation is
suggested by the other Mss. and is supported by the contents of the
43rd chapter, which deals with the conveyance.
    (2) शिल्पि is apparently for शिल्पिन (vocative).
  8. J. सर्वै; सर्वे would certainly give a better meaning.
  9. (1) I. च ममबली for मञ्चली ।
    (2) A. साल, B. फाल for फलक ।
  10. (1) A. त्वयिकारंड राशिभिः ।
    (2) धरादिभिः is apparently an adjective to चतुर्विधम् and should
be in the nominative singular; as it is, it bears no sense.
  11. (1) B. चादित् सा ज्ञायते ।
From the contents of the first line the expression would appear as
    चादित्यस्य for चादित्यानां । * (2) I. J. read महि (without a case-ending).

10 MĀNASĀRA
15. Grammatically it is necessary to read either गन्ध in the accusa-
tive plural or स्पृश् in the instrumental plural, the former being
certainly better. रस would be more grammatical than रसा ।
16. (1) As the line stands, परीक्ष्य, without any connection with a
nominative, is grammatically a bad form.
(2) I. सुभूमौ ।
17. B. भूतिः रसा; the second असौ is apparently for एभिः or आभिः ।
19. I. J. तदुम्बर; J. प्रणव ।
21. (1) I. J. विस्तारः । (2) I. J. अष्टा; if the reading विस्तारः be preserved,
we must read समाधिक्यः, but this construction does not bear a satisfactory
meaning. We would read विस्तारादष्टसमाधिक्यं दैर्ध्यं ; compare line 24 below.
J. leaves out the lines 19-21, and B. 19-22.
22. I J. आदिक; the emendation is suggested by the other Mss.
compare line 20 above.
23. महि is not intended to be read in the neuter because the
adjective सम्यक्प्रदा is read in the feminine ; but the other adjectives are
read in the neuter.
24. (1) I. मादिकायामपितयेत् । (2) A. युक्त । It should be noticed that
the rules of grammar are outrageously violated in this line.
25. B. अनवद्यरसा ।
26. (1) I. पखे । (2) A. महि for मही. The neuter adjectives qualifying
feminine noun in lines 25, 26 as in 21—24, if not in 18—20 and 27-29,
should be noticed.
27. J. मायतमाधिकम् ।
28. I. रविम् for रसम् ।
29. I. दस्तु for वस्तु ।
30. This line seems to be out of place here.
34. (1) I. J. विजां for विशां; the mistake seems due to the careless-
ness of the copyists.
(2) I. शूद्रैः for शूद्राणां seems to have been prompted by the
desire of preserving the metre.
(3) B. प्रागुक्तञ्चशोभयेत्

CRITICAL NOTES 11
CHAPTER IV

  1. The contents of the chapter necessitate the emendation ;
there seems to be a confusion between this line and first line of next
    chapter.
  2. I. J. चायतं for जायते ; the emendation is suggested by the other
    Mss.
  3. (1) I. वनुरङ्ग ।
    (2) I. द्विरतं, J. द्विरदं ।
    (3) I. वीखोण्डारतं for साकरङ्गु । B. D. साकार ; A. F. सागर ।
  4. B. D. किंचित्पूर्णे गजादिभिः ।
  5. I. याह्ये for धान्यै; the emendation is suggested by all other Mss.
  6. I. सं······स्पना for संस्पर्शना ।
  7. A. F. J. सेशोकः । प्रशोक is the usual form.
  8. (1) I. J. A. सूत apparently for चूत । (2) A. F. B. D. षट्

in line 30:
In line 33: "33. B. D. खलं नामानभिपश्चात् कृति च शूर्पलक्षणं ।"
'ख' in 'खलं' has a round top-left, goes down, connects to 'व' shape.
In line 30: "कोखेषु" has the exact same 'ख'! So it is indeed "कोखेषु"!

Let's check line 31:
"31. I. J. शील, A. F. B. D. शिव for शाल suggested by the other Mss."
Yes, "शील", "शिव for शाल".

Line 32:
"32. I. मक for मर्कट ।"
Yes, "I. मक for मर्कट ।"

Line 33:
"33. B. D. खलं नामानभिपश्चात् कृति च शूर्पलक्षणं ।"
Wait, let's check:
"खलं" - 'ख', 'ल' with anusvara.
"नामानभिपश्चात्" - 'ना', 'मा', 'न', 'भि', 'प', 'श्चा', 'त्'.
"कृति" - 'कृ', 'ति'.
"च" - 'च'.
"शूर्पलक्षणं" - 'शू' with repha? No, 'शू' with repha is 'शूर्'. Then 'प', 'ल', 'क्ष', 'णं

CRITICAL NOTES : CHAPTER IV 13
36. A. F. स्यं निर्जेता, I.J. वस्तु रेव स्यानोजिता भवेत् for विधानं तदेवं स्याद्दुर्जि-
तम् (suggested by B. D.) whereof ऊर्जित is obviously an incorrect
form for वर्जित ।
37. A. F. B. D. विवं च । It would have been more appropriate if
this line could be read before the preceding one.
38. (1) I. J. वास्तोल्ह्ये । (2) B. D. महत् । (3) I. J. च for यः ।
39. B. D. तदुच्छ्रस्य नियात्तस्याद्विजशकाहरा ; the second half of this line
remains more or less obscure.
40. (1) A. F. स्यंभि । (2) I. has a lacuna for बहु, which is supplied
by all other Mss. B. D. न्यमि सादरवस्था स्वर्णी निबहुरसयहु ।
41. (1) A. F. विव, B. D. तिव for बीज । (2) A. F. वृतैः

गोमन्धो or गोमन्थो? Look at 'थ': 'थ' has a loop. But 'ध' also has a loop in some fonts. However, look at 'रोमंदाद्गार': here there is anusvara and 'द' = रोमंदाद्गार, or रोमंथाद्गार? Ruminating is romantho/romantha (रोमन्थ)!
Ah! 'रोमन्थ' = chewing the cud / rumination!
So is it 'गोमन्थो रोमंथाद्गार' or is the text corrupt in MS and printed as:
Look at the characters:
In 'गोमन्धो' / 'गोमन्थो':
Wait, look at 'रोमंदाद्गार' vs 'रोमदोद्गार':
Wait, in 'रोमदोद्गार', it's definitely 'दोद्गार' (द + ो + द + ् + ग + ा + र = दोद्गार)!
And before it: 'रोमं' then 'दाद्गार' or 'दोद्गार'?
Wait! Look at the letter in 'रोमंदाद्गार':
र, ो = रो
म, ं = मं
द, ो / द, ा ? Look at the top: it has a stroke: 'दो' or 'दा'?
Wait, look at: 'रोमंदोद्गार'? No, there is an 'ा' and no 'े' on the bar? Wait, the letter after 'मं' has: 'द' +

CRITICAL NOTES : CHAPTER V 15

17. B. विथै for विथवैः ।
18. B. दित्सतिस्पते, A. C. F. द्विति''''स्विते ।
20. (1) B. ख्यापनं ; A. C. F. खनितं । (2) A. C. F. वास्तु, B. खुपस्सुध्य ।

unconnected and not found in any other Mss.]

31. B. परीक्ष्यं तु कूपदं परितस्सुधोः; A. C. F. परिक्षेतकूप''''ष्ष्वतिः शुचिः ।
परीक्ष्येमं is an imposible form; perhaps it was intended to be परीक्ष्यं (1st
sing. विधिलिङ् ), which, however, does not suit the context.
32. (1) B. गृहं तं, A. F. ग्रहन्नं । (2) B. ते for वै ।

18 MĀNASĀRA
85. (1) A. omits the first word, I. F. त्रिमयं for त्रिधा suggested by
J. The former word in the latter sense, i. e. to imply three times, is
not generally used. B. तेभ्योऽपि दक्षिणं दद्यात् । (2) B. वर्जयेत् ।
Between lines 86 and 87, the lines 22 to 25 of the next chapter are
repeated in I. through some confusion.
87. (1) A. F. अधिकरण, B. अघर्षण । (2) B. स्थपतिभ्यो, which seems to
be the proper form.
89. I. leaves out कुर्यात् ।
90. A. C. F. have a lacuna, B. तान्य for त्तादि ।
91. A. C. F. रेवकषंख, B. लयावास्तुखवं for the second pāda. It should
be noticed that this last line of the chapter does not complete the
verse.
Colophon:—I. परिग्रह for संग्रहनाम । suggested by the other Mss.
The contents of the chapter necessitate the emendation; there
seems to be a confusion between the titles of this chapter and of the
preceding one.

by J.

second half of the line.
8. (1) B. प्राप्त्म for प्राप्त । (2) B. रशं for रश्मं । (3) I. समं तथा for
समन्ततः, suggested by J. and other Mss.

15. (1) B. निवृत्तं । (2) I. J. निर्भूखं । (3) I. चित्र for कुत्र suggested by J.
16. B. प्रचक्षते ।
The strict grammar would require the reading शङ्कु ।
17. (1) A. F. नार for तारं । (2) A. C. F. शरांकुशं ।
18. J. वसेयेत् ।
19. A. J. कन्यास्रं, F. अन्याण, B. कन्यस्तं द्वादशायामं ।
20. A. F. त्रयं, I. J. त्रिय, B. त्रय; we have kept the last form, though
it is not sanctioned by usage as a first member of the compound. In
this sense the form like लोकत्रय is generally used.
21. (1) A. F. नामि, B. नाम । (2) B. नचां ।
B. omits the next four lines 22 to 25.
23. J. तत्त्वज्ञा, I. बिन्दुतासंज्ञा ।
24. A. B. F. मापयेत् ।
25. I. ततः for तकम् suggested by J. and other Mss.

20 MĀNASĀBA
26. Like शास्त्रवित्, शिल्पवित् would be the more usual form.
27. J. पूर्वादि ।
28. B. मतंद्वितः for त्यजेत्ततः ।
The word बिन्दु is usualy masculine; the correct form should,
therefore, be बिन्दुम् ।
29–30. I. reads छायया after षड्, and it is preceded by चायाम
which implies almost the same idea as छायया । Though the mean-
ing of the verse is more or less obscure, the reading चाधिक्य in place of
छायया, suggested by J. and other Mss., is preferable.
(1) J. शन त्रव, A. F. नवम for त्रप ।
The first portion of line 30 is taken from J. in place of which I.
reads तस्यां नवनवच्छायां, which does not seem to be a better reading. The
further justification of reading त्रपच्छाया here lies in the fact that the
details of त्रपच्छाया are described in the lines immediately following.
(2) I. J. प्राचीन, A. F. प्राची for प्राचीं suggested by B.
31. I. यह, J. प्रव for त्रप । (2) J. छाया, B. मासादौ यावन्माय ।

gested by the other Mss.
37. I. यत्सूत्रं, B. तयाशुद्धं for यच्छुद्धं suggested by J. A. F.
38. I. चोत्तरतो दिशि for दक्षिणतो भवेत्, and leaves out the next
line, which is necessary.
39. J. reads छायाटोत्तरे, which is apparently a mistake for चोत्तरतो,
due to the carelessness of the copyist.
40. (1) I. यादिमुखे, J. याभि मुखे । (2) For वामे वामं न्यवेद्यते, B. धावा
मान्यवेरके, A. F. प्रत्यच्छायाम यामन्यमन्यते ।
41. (1) I. A. F. नित्या for नीत्वा suggested by J. B. (2) I. दाने for
धामा suggested by J.
42. (1) I. भवद्वययन् for त्रपच्छायां । (2) I. शिखि ।
A. leaves out the next two lines 43, 44.
48. (1) B. F. नौथौं for नीत्वा । (2) J. तात्परतो, I. चोत्तरता for चोत्तरतो ।

for the last word.
49. (1) I. युश्च धान, B. अवताया, A. F. युष्ट···च्छाया for यपरूच्छायां
suggested by J. (2) A. F. रोचते ।
50. (1) The ungrammatical combination, प्रथमे पङ्कौ, should be
noticed. (2) J. विवर्जयेत्, which form is more usually used to express the
sense.
A. F. omit the next 6 lines.
51. (1) I. मध्यदेशे दिनं । (2) J. चान्य, B. चांन्य । (3) I. अङ्गुली ।
52. J. वृषभे प्रथमे पंक्ति चांगुलं च विवर्जयेत्, B. प्रथमे देशके ।
53. (1) I. has a lacuna after चै । (2) B. दशकं । (3) J. त्यज्यक्वायपङ्कया

under line 20, chapter V. The mistake is often repeated.

67. A. F. चांगुलं द्वयङ्गुलं ।

70. I. J. भवेत् for बुधः suggested by the other Mss.
72. B. कुंमादौ ।
75. B. मध्ये दशदिने चैव ।

22 MĀNASĀRA
In place of lines 58 to 76 J. reads the following :—
श्रवणे प्रथमे पङ्कि द्व्यङ्गुलं च त्यजेत् बुधः ।
मध्ये पङ्किश्चमेकं वा अन्त्यपङ्कि विनाङ्गुलम् ।
कन्या च प्रथमे पङ्कि वर्जयेत् द्व्यङ्गुलं तथा ।

for तु । (3) J. वृषहस्तितम् for वृषभस्थितम् ।
79. (1) B. वृक्ष विमेधकः । (2) I. has a lacuna between ऋक्ष and भवेत्
and leaves out यदि ।
80. A. F. add शङ्का after उक्त; B. omits तत्र ।
I. omits the next three lines, of which the first two (81, 82) have
been preserved by J. B. D. A. F., and the last by all these Mss.,
except J. These lines (81, 82, 83) refer to a further modification of
the rules regarding the calculation of shadow; but they have been
altogether left out by the codex architypus : they are, therefore, inclu-
ded within square brackets to indicate their doubtful validity.
81. A. F. राश्यानितर ।

CRITICAL NOTES : CHAPTER VI 23
83. J. omits this line. B. प्रसारयेत् and after this B. adds एवं कृते फलं
वास्तु सुखार्थं स्यात् समुद्भवः। इति श(शं)कुस्थापनप्राचीन लक्षं, and then omits
the next eight lines.

than the last phrase of the line.

tree ; मेदस् is also the name of a plant).
111. A. F. J. पञ्च apparently for पङ्कि meaning ten, but this or
the other reading पञ्चति given in the text, does not give any sense;
apparently it is intended for पञ्चविंशति ।
