INTRODUCTION.
S'rīmad Vallabhacharya, the author of this little treatise 'Essence of Doctrine'
'Siddhanta Rahasya', was born on the 11th day of the dark half of chaitra, 1535
Samvat, (1479. A. D,) in the forest of Champa near Raichur. His father was
Lakshmana Bhatta, and Yallammagaru was his mother. He was a Telugu Brahmin
studying the Taitariya S'ākhā of the Black Yajur-Veda. Vallabha's birth is
shrouded in the mysteries of the devotional beliefs of his followers, but one thing
is certain that his followers believed that he was commissioned to inaugurate a
great religious revival in India. From the writings of Vallabha which are
available now, we can say that this belief was shared by himself also. It is not
an uncommon phenomenon in India. Ramanuja, Madhva, Nimbarka, Chaitanya,
and several other great teachers did believe in their special messages to the
world. Vallabha's ancestors were Deekshitas, and were devoted to Krishna in the
form of Gopala. The Swarūpa of Madana Mohanaji in the Seventh Pitha is the
one which came to him from his Sixth ancestor Yajna Narayana Bhatta. It is
possible that Vallabha's father Lakshmana Bhatta and his ancestors were the
Upāsakas of Gopala according to the cult of Vishnuswami. The early years of
Vallabha were passed by him with his father at Benares, where he is said to
have mastered all the Vedas, six Dars'anas, and all schools of Āstika and Nāstika
thinkers. He studied the S'aiva and Vaishnava Āgamas. When Vallabha was
comparatively young, his father died. Vallabha wanted to study the Vaishnava
systems of Madhva, Ramanuja, Nimbarka and others, and seeing that they were
not prevalent there, in order to have direct knowledge, he is said to have proceeded
to the south. Vallabha's desire to go to the south of India is very natural. During
that time there was the powerful Hindu kingdom of Vijaya Nagar or Vidyanagar,
over which ruled the mighty monarch Krishnadeva-Raya, himself a great
Vaishnava. During his time, it seems a convention was held of the representatives
of all the existing Sampradayas. The session seems to have been going on when
Vallabha visited Vijayanagar. The main dispute seems to have been between
Vyāsa Tirtha, the Mādhva, and some representative of Mayavadins. It seems
also clear that the Dwaita philosophy of the Mādhvas could not hold its own
against the attack of S'ānkaras. At this juncture Vallabha seems to have baffled
all by his great learning and powerful arguments. We see no reason to doubt this
fact. Vallabha's position was peculiar. He accepted Adwaita pure and simple
without the interference of the Māyāvāda of S'ankara; hence all the attacks
advanced by Madhvas and others against Advaita lost their force as against him.
His acceptance of 'अद्वैतपूर्वकभक्ति' disarmed the opposition of both Vaishnavas and
S'ānkaras. The position taken up by Vallabha was not altogether singular. We
believe that Narayana Bhatta, the author of the famous drama, Veņisanhara was
the follower of a system of Philosophy which combined in itself the Pure Adwaita
of the Upanishads and the Bhakti Mārga. Whatever that may be, it is certain that
Vallabha made a very great impression on king Krishnadeva, Vyasa-Tirtha and
others who were present there. In consequence of this session, the king performed a
'Kanakābhisheka' with hundred Maunds of Gold. It is said that Vallabha did
not accept this gold and began to commence his travels. This abstinence on the

part of Vallabha added to the admiration of all those present for him. Vyāsa Tīrtha,
the Mādhva, actually requested him to be the head-priest of his matha after him.
Vyasa-Tirtha with king Krishna-deva again approached Vallabha and presented
him with a good many valuables. From these presents Vallabha is said to havr
prepared a gold mekhla set with diamonds, rubies etc., and presented the same to
S'ri Vitthala in the Vitthalaswami Temple at Vijayanagara. Ultimately, it appears,
Vallabha could not conscientiously accept the offer of Vyasa-Tirtha, but from
this time Vallabha came to be regarded as a Great Acharya.
After this, he seems to have met with great opposition from the Mayavadi
Pandits of Benares. In order to silence them for ever, Vallabha wrote out a pamphlet
in mixed verse and prose and affixed the same to the doors of the Kās'hi Vis'vanātha,
with a challenge to Benares Pandits to refute the same, if they could. It seems
this discussion ended into threats of personal violence, as a consequence of
which Vallabha left Benares and moved over to Adel on the opposite bank
of the Ganges.
The last portion of his life was passed at Adel, where he finished his works
which were begun by him during his travels and served Lord Krishna with the
love and devotion of Gopees, and founded his system on it. At the age of 52 he
left his Parnas'āla, joined the Sannyasa Ās'rama and came to Benares. For a
month he observed fast, and for the last eight days he observed मौनव्रत, and on the
2nd day of the bright half of Āshadha mid-day he left this world, Samvat 1587.
Vallabha had married one Maha Lakshmi. By her he had two sons, Gopinatha
and Vitthales'wara. Gopinatha had one son named Purushottama, after whom his
line became extinct. Vitthales'wara lived over seventy years. He had seven sons.
During his time the Sampradaya flourished very considerably. Todarmal, Birbal,
and Ray Purushottam seem to have come under his influence. Akbar also presented
him with Gokula and Jatipura villages in Vraja. All the present Maharajas
are direct agnate descendants of Vitthales'wara.
While he was staying in the north of India, Vallabhāchārya came into contact
with Kes'ava Kashmirin, the famous Nimbarka scholar, and Chaitanya, the Bengal
Saint. They were all Krishnopasakas, and it seems from Sampradayika gathas
that their relations were very cordial. Kes'ava presented his pupil Madhava
Bhatta Kashmirin to Vallabha in Dakshina of Bhagavat-katha S'ravana. He became
his devout disciple, and during his whole life acted as the scribe of S'ri Vallabha.
It seems that during Madhava Bhatta's stay with him at Adel, Vallabha composed
his numerous works. During that interval Vallabha wrote Purva Mimānsā Bhashya,
Brahma-Sūtra Bhashya, Tattvadipa-Nibandha with his own commentary, Sukshma
tikā and Subodhini on Srimad Bhagavata, and the sixteen Prakarana Granthas
giving in brief the essence of his views. It is really unfortunate that only a
fragment of his Purva Mimānsa Bhashja is available now. Aṇu Bhashya as we have
it now is not wholly written out by him. The last Adhyaya and a half of the Bhashya
is finished by his son Vitthales'wara. Sukshma tikā is almost lost. Even Pushti-
Pravaha-Maryada Bheda, one of the minor Prakaranas, is not available as a whole.
The Bhagavata Subodhini is available only on the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 10th and a portion
of 11th Skandhas. It is possible that Vallabha wrote on all the Skandhas. The
loss of these valuable works seems to have been due partly to the apathy of his
descendants and followers. It is a pity that no one seems to take care to preserve
even those of the writings of Vallabhāchārya and his descendants which are available

INTRODUCTION.
at present. Stray efforts like ours are hardly commensurate with the task which
is of immense magnitude, requiring the collaboration of Scholars, Maharajas, and rich
Vaishnavas coupled with earnestness of purpose. (We may give an instance here
of this unpardonable apathy and gross negligence. We have got in our possession
a manuscript of भाष्यप्रकाश in the handwriting of that powerful author श्रीपुरुषोत्तमजी,
and a MSS. of रश्मि, a wonderful and elaborate commentary on it, written by योगि-
श्रीगोपेश्वरजी in his own hand. Both of these works are extremely rare, there being
only one copy of रश्मि in the whole world. For the last seven years, we have been
dinning into the ears of Maharajas and rich Vaishnavas to arrange for funds,
about Rs. 32,000, for the publication of this magnum opus-great work, but as yet,
there is no response. The work can be divided into 4 अध्यायs, and again each अध्याय
can be divided into 4 parts. Are there not 16 persons in our सम्प्रदाय, from among
महाराजs and वैष्णवs, who can afford to give Rs. 2000 each, for this monumental work,
the foundation of our सम्प्रदाय? We hope our appeal will be immediately heard, and
we shall be able to send to the press one or two parts at once).
During his visit to Vraja, Vallabha set up the Shrine of S'ri Nathaji on the holy
hill Govardhan in a temple built for that purpose by one Purna Malla Kshatriya.
During his stay in Vraja, on the midnight of 11th day of the bright half of S'rāvaṇa,
he says he had holy communion with Lord Krishna, who commanded him to
initiate Jivas in his service. This initiation consists of two parts: one is the
formula to be repeated by the aspirant 'before the deity by holding Tulsi-leaves in
hand and afterwards placing the same at the feet of the deity through Acharya,
and the other part is the effect of the same, on the devotee, by which he becomes
the Adhikari in the Sevā Mārga of Lord S'ri Krishna. The Subject of the present
treatise is the same. In the notorious Maharaja Libel case, this work with its
commentary by Gokulanathji was cited by the defendant to show that the religious
tenets preached by Vallabhacharya and his grandson sanctioned immoral practices.
This is the most perverted use made of the noblest of works. At this distance of
time it is difficult for us to see how such a monstrous suggestion could have been
made. Vallabhacharya's whole life was based on Vairagya. In all his works, he
insists on वैराग्य as the first भगवद्धर्म. His learned descendant Purushottamaji says
'आचार्याणां तात्पर्यं त्याग एव'. It was unfortunate that all the materials available were
not placed before the court. The court was prejudiced by the highly coloured testi-
mony of the defendant's witnesses. General ignorance of the tenets of Vallabha-
charya, and a desire not to give publicity to the works of the Sampradaya helped to
create an atmosphere prejudicial to the reputation of the Sampradaya. To add to
this, the life led by a few of the priestly class, suggested an inference against them.
Of course, we have no doubt that Yadunathji Maharaja, who instituted the libel case
has not got justice in court. By a perusal of the evidence led in the case against the
Maharaja, we are driven to the conclusion that the verdict of the court as regards
Vallabhacharya's teachings is entirely wrong. We are of opinion that the publicati-
on of this whole work with all the commentaries is the best answer to all the
misconceptions about, and false allegations against the सम्प्रदाय.
Let us first see what is taught by Vallabhacharya and his grandson Gokulanatha
and others. In the Sampradaya, there are two rites generally performed, viz.
शरणमंत्रोपदेश and आत्मनिवेदन. The first gives recognition as a Vaishnava and the
second makes one Adhikāri in the Sevā Mārga. The first initiation is given by a
descendant of Vallabhacharya by repetition of the mantra श्रीकृष्णः शरणं मम in the ears

of the child and then putting the Tulsikanthi on his neck. The performance
of the second initiation is also generally through a descendant of Vallabhacharya.
In both the initiations, age is not to be considered. It is an accepted belief in the
Sampradaya that Vallabhacharya alone is the आचार्य, and all his descendants, howso-
ever illustrious, have never claimed anything further than being recognized as
Thus the initiation is believed to be done by Vallabhacharya himself through
the instrumentality of his agnate descendants. The dedication is to Lord Krishna,
and not to Acharya as will be presently shown. It is monstrous to substitute
the word Acharya in place of Krishna and then to charge Vallabhacharya that he
preached immorality. It would be a cruel injustice to one of the greatest saints
and philosophers of India. The vow repeated at the time of the आत्मनिवेदन ceremony
Above we have related the current practice and belief in the Sampradaya, but we
must admit that in the known writings of Vallabhacharya it is nowhere mentioned
that this initiation should take place only through him or his descendants. Valla-
bhacharya does not seem to insist that any particular person should initiate you.
Of course it goes without saying that the person who initiates and the person initiated
must be spiritually exalted. In his Nibandha, while discussing the question as to
who can be a Guru, he observes as follows:—'कृष्णसेवापरं वीक्ष्य दम्भादिरहितं नरम् ।
. His commentator here observes as follows:—'कलेर्बलिष्ठत्वेनाग्रिमेषु गुरुलक्षणा-
Putting together these two statements,
we can easily understand how the idea of S'rimadacharya's presence was always
considered necessary at the time of initiation. Vallabha's descendants even to this
day initiate their pupils not in their own name and responsibility, but in the
name and responsibility of S'ri Vallabha.
This initiation is referred to as ब्रह्मसंबन्ध by Vallabhacharya in the present
work. The necessary qualification of the initiated is भगवत्कृपा, which can be inferred
from one's inclination towards the Bhagvan-Marga. Thus the कृपायुक्त soul has
to dedicate his everything to Lord Krishna through Srimadacharya, and proclaim
himself as the दास of Krishna. This is what is known as ब्रह्मसंबन्ध, and it is in
this sense interpreted by all the commentators here. Gokulanathaji says:—

१. We have published the Gadya after a considerable hesitation. We know
that some Vaishnavas will feel annoyed by this act of ours. But we have, after long
deliberation, come to the conclusion that the mission of S'ri Vallabhacharya would
be fulfilled better by the publication of the same by ourselves in correct form,
rather than allow the calumniators of the Sampradaya to publish the same in a
distorted form and thereby heap mischievous allegations on his fair name. However,
for those who cannot see eye to eye with us on this question, we can do no more
than give a reply in the words of Sri Purushottamji, the greatest scholar of the
र. The followers of Gokulanathji repeat श्रीगोपीजन-
वल्लभाय after the word कृष्णाय. Some repeat देहप्राणेन्द्रिय etc. instead of देहेन्द्रिय etc.
Some repeat वित्तं इह पराणि instead of वित्तेहापराणि. Substantially this is the
correct reading.

INTRODUCTION.

According to Raghunathji ब्रह्मसंबन्ध means this :—बृहत्वात् ब्रह्म पुरुषोत्तमः तत्संबन्धस्तस्मिन्
Kalyanarayaji says :—
Vrajotsavaji says :—
Gokulotsavaji observes :—
Harirayaji says :—
Vitthalarayaji says :—
Giridharaji defines it thus :—अस्मिन् मार्गे यशोदोत्सङ्गलालितश्रीकृष्णस्यैवोपास्यत्वात् तस्य
Lalubhatta explains it thus:—ब्रह्मणा सह संबन्धः स्वस्वामिभावलक्षणो देहेन्द्रियप्राणान्तःकरण-
According to the last Tikakara it means this :—निर्दोषं हि समं ब्रह्माइम्, तस्मिन् संबन्धस्य
Purushottamaji has written on almost all works of Vallabhacharya, and he
From the above quotations the reader will be in a position to see that the
so-called ब्रह्मसंबन्ध has reference to Krishna, and not to Acharya or any of his
descendants. From Vallabhacharya down to the most recent commentator, all the
writers have understood that the समर्पण is to Purushottama or Krishna and not to
any mortal being. In spite of these facts, it would be monstrous to substitute the
word Acharya in place of Purushottama and then to draw the inference that
Vallabhacharya and his Sampradaya looked upon immoral practices as sanctioned
by his teachings. Of course we are not in a position to deny that a certain section
of the followers and some individuals of the priestly class had degenerated. Such
degeneration comes, at one time or another, in all religions. But to say that the
followers or priests were degenerated is one thing, and to conclude from their
mischievous activities that Vallabhacharya or any of his learned followers preached
or tolerated or sanctioned immoral practices is another thing. Vallabhacharya
and his learned descendants have condemned immorality to this day in no
uncertain terms. In order to give an idea of this, we shall quote from their writings.
Vallabhacharya in his निबन्ध lays down the rules for the guidance of a Bhakta
Commenting on this passage, Purushottamaji discusses this question at great length
2

INTRODUCTION.
To give a correct idea of what he has said there, we shall quote that portion of his
commentary and leave the reader to judge as to how far it is true to say that the
Sampradaya sanctioned immoral practices.

The last lines of Purushottamaji '
विमुखान् निश्चित्य तत्सङ्गं परिहृत्य सर्वेन्द्रियनियग्रहः कार्यः' represent the correct attitude of the
Sampradaya as regards morality. No descendant of Vallabhacharya has claimed
himself to be आचार्य. The Sampradaya recognized Vallabhacharya alone as आचार्य.
Hence we don't find any of Vallabha's descendants assuming the said title as we
find in case of the successors to the Mathas of S'ankaracharya. When this is
the position of the descendants of Vallabhacharya, how was it possible for
them to pose as Krishna-Purushottama-incarnate? Vallabha himself says that
When that is the position of Vallabha-
charya, how could it be otherwise with any of his representatives? Vallabha
was succeeded by his two illustrious sons Gopinatha and Vitthales'wara. To them
he was father both in spiritual and physical sense. The expressions uttered by
them as regards their father are full of fervent devotion.
It is rare to find such fervent devotion in ordinary relation
of son and father. Sons of Vitthaleswara regarded him similarly. This fact and
the fact of their being men of spotless character, sound learning, and single-minded
devotion to Krishna generated a sort of intense devotion to his descendants among
the members of the Sampradaya. The long life generally enjoyed by them leads one
to the same conclusion. Vallabha's son Vitthaleswara lived for over seventy years.
His grandson Gokulanatha the commentator of सिद्धान्तरहस्य lived over 90 years, his
great grandson Harirayaji lived over 120 years. Numerous instances to this day
could be multiplied. Almost all the illustrious scholars in the Sampradaya are
descendants of Vallabhacharya. The position being this, we are not surprised to

INTRODUCTION.
find that Vallabha's descendants came to be looked upon as objects of deep venera-
tion like Krishna. So far we see nothing wrong. The vedic injunction यस्य देवे
तस्यैते कथिता ह्यर्थाः प्रकाशन्ते महात्मनः' lays down the correct principle,
that one who has भक्ति towards the teacher as he has towards God, to such a great
soul these meanings (teachings) become visible. To entertain the same भक्ति towards
आचार्य as they do to God is necessary for the right understanding of his teachings.
From this it would be absurd to infer that the dedication as contemplated to God
is to be done to Acharya. On this point there is absolutely no room for doubt.
Thus we come to the conclusion that the dedication contemplated in the Sampradaya
has reference to Purushottama-Krishna-alone, and this can be done through
Vallabhacharya alone, who is considered present (in spirit) at the initiation. His
descendants are all गुरुद्वार. Thus ब्रह्मसंबन्ध referred to in the present work is to take
a vow, in the presence of Acharya or his descendant, that whatever is comprised
in अहं and मम of one is dedicated to God Krishna, and that he is his दास.
Having thus seen clearly that the ब्रह्मसंबन्ध spoken of here in the present
work has reference to Purushottama-Krishna the Highest Divinity, and not to
Acharya or his descendants representing him, let us now understand what is
the purport of the गद्यार्थ—the vow by which the ब्रह्मसंबन्ध is supposed to take
place with God in the presence of the Acharya or his representative. According
to this ग्रन्थ, this was the vow which was communicated to S'rî Vallabha-
charya by Krishna Himself on the mid-night of the bright-half of the month
of S'râvana, and Damodardasa was the first Sevaka initiated. As regards the
verses describing the effect of this initiation in the present work, there is some
difference of opinion among the commentators as to whether these verses are
those ones spoken by Krishna to Acharya, or whether they are composed by
Acharya incorporating the sense of every letter uttered by Him. Whichever view
we take it does not much matter. We are concerned with the sense expressed in
these verses and not to the authorship of the same, because in either case the
authoritativeness of them is the same.
Vallabhacharya's activities were many-fold. His ancestors and he himself
were Deekshitas. They daily performed Agnihotra. In his Subodhini he calls
himself श्रीवल्लभदीक्षित. Kumārila's Purva Mimansa-view was not accepted by him.
In order to bring out the true significance as he understood it to be, he wrote
out a भाष्य on the Sutras of Jaimini. Hence we find his name कर्ममार्गप्रवर्तक.
Similarly, to preach the true significance of ब्रह्मवाद he wrote out a भाष्य on the
Sūtras of Badarayana. To explain भक्तिशास्त्र correctly, he wrote his Subodhini on
S'rimad Bhagavata. But after doing all this, he saw that times were not suitable.
People had not the requisite capacity to study all this.
He seems to have thought over this question for a long time. 'भगवच्छास्त्रमाज्ञाय
विचार्य च पुनः पुनः । यदुक्तं हरिणा पश्चात् संदेहविनिवृत्तये । एकं शास्त्रं देवकीपुत्रगीतमेको देवो देवकी-
पुत्र एव । मंत्रोप्येकस्तस्य नामानि यानि कर्माप्येकं तस्य देवस्य सेवा'. Thus it appears that after
establishing the कर्ममार्ग and ब्रह्मवाद, he wanted to find out a path by which all
can approach God. The Supreme Divinity was described in the Upanishads as
Out of these various
aspects, which aspect should be selected as to be agreeable to all? The आनन्द-
मय—पुरुषोत्तम—is the best aspect. There are two views of सृष्टि, viz. illusory
and real. There is no clear reference to the illusory character of the सृष्टि, in
Upanishads, but on the contrary सृष्टि is described as रमण or लीला in passages

INTRODUCTION.
Badarayana distinctly describes सृष्टि as लीला and not as माया,
while भागवत describes सृष्टि as क्रीडाभाण्ड. सृष्टि is two-fold, one referring to human
souls, and the other referring to jagat. The first takes place according to the
Vedic passage 'यथाग्नेः क्षुद्राः विस्फुलिंगाः'; and the other in accordance with 'यतो वा इमानि
Thus human soul becomes the अंश of the Highest Divinity, while the
Universe is the कार्य of ब्रह्मन्. Brahman is सत्-चित्-आनन्द, hence His अंश is also
सत्-चित्-आनन्द, but for the exigences of रमण, his आनन्दांश becomes non-manifest,
तिरोभूत; the result is that he forgets that everything of his including himself is
Lord's, and superimposes his अहन्ता and ममता on objects which are really not
his. In result he suffers sorrows and miseries. To remove this ignorance, the
vow mentioned in गद्य enjoins on the initiated to give up his अहंता and ममता in
all objects, and dedicate them to the Lord. By dedicating everything including himself
to Lord, what becomes of him? He becomes Lord's. He becomes Lord's servant.
His अहंता and ममता cease to be जैव, they become भगवदीय. The moment he realises
that he is Lord's slave, he feels that he has to abide by His will. His will prevails
everywhere. His will is for Sport—लीला—and he has to play the part allotted to
him. Sorrow and misery caused by ignorance of Maya, are substituted by the joy,
happiness of Lila. Gita verse, and
अंशो नानाव्यपदेशात् we know that the Human soul is the अंश of Brahman. We know
from another vedic passage 'यो यदंशः स तं भजेत्' that the अंश should worship
that अंशिन् whose अंश he is. Hence in Vallabha's system the initiated are supposed
to be अंशाs of अंशिन् कृष्ण. This Krishna is रसात्मक आनन्दमय पुरुषोत्तम taught in the
Taitiriya. This is the highest conception of the Supreme Being where he is described
as आनन्द and रस, and the mode to approach Him is only through निरुपधि निरवधि
To feel the क्लेश—pangs of one's separation from this रसात्मक आनन्दमय is
in itself a form of Bliss of the highest type. This is possible only when there is
निरुपधि and निरवधि प्रेम for the रस आनन्द कृष्ण. This is taught in the formula of the
गद्य when it describes the initiated as one in whom the non-manifestation of the
bliss of the pangs of Separation for infinite number of years has taken place. The
words भगवते कृष्णाय describe the One to whom everything is to be dedicated. The
The words देह-इन्द्रिय-प्राण-अन्तःकरण and
तद्धर्म denote the objects of dedication comprised in अहम्.
वित्त, इह and अपर denote those comprised in मम. आत्मन् is the chief with which
the अहम्, मम and its objects are all dedicated. The result of this dedication is
that one becomes दास and His. This is the प्रतिज्ञा administered to the initiated
by Acharya or his representative before the Swarūpa of रसात्मक कृष्ण. To see
the fulfilment of this प्रतिज्ञा, the सेवामार्ग is to be followed by the initiated. Sevā
presupposes प्रेम. Hence प्रेमपूर्वक कृष्णसेवा is the vow.
How this प्रतिज्ञा could be fulfilled is explained in these seven or eight verses
of the present work. Let us then see what the purport of these कारिकाs is.
The गद्य is the form of प्रतिज्ञा declared by Krishna Himself to Acharya. This is not
an unfamiliar thing in the Bhagavata. Samarpana in one form or another is
taught in the Eleventh Skandha of Bhagavata, but as 'शतशोपि विचारितं जीवबुद्ध्या अन्यथाय-
Vallabha could not fix upon the same. When Krishna communicated this to him,
he took it as a mode sanctioned by Him and thenceforward he initiated his pupil by
administering this vow. As Vallabhacharya was succeeded by very able and illustrious
descendants, the custom arose that in the Sampradaya the प्रतिज्ञा could only be
administered by them in the name of Acharya. The last advice given by
Acharya to his sons '

INTRODUCTION.
भावस्तत्राप्यसद्धीयः' shows the spirit. By the use of the two words भगवते
and कृष्णाय for the Highest Divinity, all aspects spoken of the same in the vedic
literature are suggested. Similarly by the use of the word दास, the अंशत्व and its
implications are suggested.
Vallabha observes as follows:—'
This is
the relation between जीव and ब्रह्मन्. As the whole and and a part are अनन्य, so
But this fact of अनन्यत्व does not
come in the way of भगवल्लीला. By the अभिध्यान of Lord, Jiva's आनन्दांश and भगवत्त्व are
gone. With the loss of भगवत्त्व he loses ऐश्वर्य, वीर्य, यशः, श्री, ज्ञान and वैराग्य, the six
comprising भगवत्त्व, and he becomes दीन पराधीन, object of सर्वदुःख, सर्वहीन, subject to the
calamity of birth and death. The loss of first four causes him बंध. The loss of
ज्ञान generates in him अहंबुद्धि and false knowledge, and the loss of वैराग्य causes विषयांसक्ति.
These two cause विपर्यय. The loss of आनन्दांश caused the जीवभाव, and consequently
आनन्द is opposed to काम, अकामरूपत्वादानन्दस्य. Thus there is no possibility by
which the lowest-जीव with all his imperfections can serve the Highest with
all His perfections. Though in fact जीव and ब्रह्मन् are अनन्य, the relation
of सेव्य and सेवक would not be possible under these circumstances. Vallabha-
charya solves this difficulty thus. Upanayana gives a Traivarṇika Adhikara in the
performance of vedic rites; similarly this Brahma Sambandha gives one Adhikara
in the भक्तिमार्ग or सेवामार्ग. This सेवा first is तनुजा and वित्तजा, by which gradually the
अहं and मम of the initiated become transformed into भगवदीय ones, and then his mind
becomes भगवदीय. When once the mind of the साधक becomes भगवदीय, his deliverance
is certain. Such a sādhaka, who has been thus initiated, has not to mind the five
fold दोषs which are enumerated here.
दोषs do not act as hindrances in this सेवामार्ग. Whatever may be the defects, in-
herent, or arising from देश and काल, or from लोक वेद, or through संयोग or स्पर्श,
whatever may be in your past life, the moment you are initiated, you are not to mind
them. You have simply to serve your Lord. All विद्याs painting, music, etc., are
अविद्याs, if they don't help you in realising the Bliss-आनन्दकृष्ण. The aim of the great
sages नारद, भरत, वात्स्यायन and others, cannot be to drown people deep into the miseries
of sansara, but to elevate them so that they can be nearer to God. There is
no रस or आनन्द in the world. ‘लौकिकपुंसि नार्यां वा तदाभासो रसशास्त्रे निरूप्यते, तद्दृष्टान्तेन
भगवद्भाववद्भवतीतिभावनाथैम्, न तु ऋषीणां लौकिके तात्पर्यं भवितुमर्हति’ expresses the same view.
This has been again very beautifully elaborated by Vitthaleswara and his descendant
Purushottama, and we shall quote the same in full.

This is the highest ideal. But all cannot be expected to reach it. Only those
who are completely निरुद्ध in Lord can realise the highest beauty of this ideal. Hence
a sound principle was laid down by Vitthaleswara that one who is not truly रसिक,
should not see this even if he is a Vaishnava. 'प्रार्थये रसिकाः स्वैरं पश्यन्त्विदमहर्निशम् ।
एतद्रसानभिज्ञस्तु मा द्राक्षीदपि वैष्णवः'. For such Vaishnavas the other aspects of Krishna
गोवर्धनधारित्व etc, are there. Unfortunately this sound maxim was not followed, and
in practice the highest ideal was most prominent, with the result that in case of
Anadhikari it caused his down-fall.
The purport of this little work is to lay down a principle that whatever
country you belong to, to whatever age, to whatever community, whatever be
your surroundings, you can approach God through this path of service based
on love. This broadest aspect was not lost sight of by Vithales'wara, and we do
find that even Mahomedans like Pathan Alikhan, and Taj Bibi, and even some
members of the untouchable classes could approach God by this Path. Followers
of this path can observe their Varnas'rama Dharmas which have reference to
the body, but this Prema-marga referred to the soul. In Bhakti of the Lord
everyone has his अधिकार. The sine-quo-non of this Adhikara is that before you
do anything you must dedicate it to Lord. Keeping Lord before you, that is,
as if you are to carry out His behests, you are to follow your pursuits. This
सेवामार्ग-रतिपथ was proclaimed by Vallabhacharya. The Highest Divinity was not
merely creator, destroyer, sustainer etc, but He was the object of the most fervent
warmth of उत्कृष्ट प्रेम. Blessed were those who realised and enjoyed this रस in the
purest स्वरूप. The women of Vraja realised the same ideal in
कृष्ण, and for a glimpse of this the great Uddhava-forsaking the ब्रह्मकथा etc., pined
to be गुल्म-लता etc., in Vraja. Hence व्रजाङ्गनाs are considered greater than ज्ञानिन्s,
greater than भक्तs, greater than मुनिs, greater than नारद and प्रह्लाद, greater than श्रोत्रिय

To follow this रतिपथ is to walk on the edge of the sword. Those who
are unable to follow this, must dedicate everything to Lord Krishna,
and serve Him faithfully as a servant serves his master. This is in short
what Vallabhacharya has by the command of Lord preached in the पञ्चाक्षर,

EDITORS’ NOTE.
Siddhānta Rahasya, one of the Sixteen Prakaraṇa Granthas of S’rī Vallabhāchārya,
with eleven commentaries and a Gujarātī translation of S’rī Purushottamaji’s Tikā,
is published by us from funds supplied to us by Bhailalbhai Purushottamdas, the
present Hon. Manager of The Dakor Temple of S’rī Ranchhodji, from the profits
of the oil-mill set up by his son Thakorlal at Nandurbar.
These commentaries are those of S’rī Gokulanathaji, S’rī Raghunathaji,
S’rī Kalyaṇarayji, S’rī Vrajotsavaji, S’rī Gokulotsavaji, S’rī Harirayaji, S’rī
Vitthales’waraji, S’rī Purushottamaji, S’rī Giridharaji, Dikshita Lalu Bhattaji,
and S’ris’āchāryamatānuvarti.
A. Gokulanathaji’s tīkā is the oldest and most well-known. Hence it is
printed first. The text of this tīkā is based on eleven MSS. The
oldest of these is dated Samvat 1730, Kartik sud 5th. It was obtained
from S’rī Vallabhalalji’s collection. Another belonged to Vitthalaraya,
Son of Damodarji. The rest were obtained from Pandit Gattulalaji’s
Collection, Ranchhodlalji, Gokulanathji and the late Mr. Tansukhram
Tripathi of Nadiad.
B. The Second Tīkā is by Raghunathji. It is based on two MSS., one
from Pandit Gattulalaji’s Library, and the other from the late Mr.
Tansukhram.
C. The Third is Kalyanarayji’s. It is based on six MSS. All the six MSS.
are old and good. One of these belonged to one Pitambara, and the
other to Dwarkes’wara, dated Samvat 1812 Posh Sud 12th.
D. The Fourth is Vrajotsavaji’s. It is doubtful as to who wrote this. Of the
five MSS. consulted, one attributed the authorship to Chacha S’rī
Gopeshaji, another MSS. obtained from Kankroli, to Gopalaji, while
the rest to Vrajotsavaji. Hence it is named here after him. If we are
to rely on our judgment of the style of writing, from the known style
of Chacha Gopes’aji, this is different. It is probable that Gopalaji is
not the author of this.
E. Harirayji’s tikā is in verse. It is based on four MSS.; all are old and
good, and obtained from the same sources as above.
F. The MSS. of Gokulotsavaji’s tikā is dated 1871, s’ake 1736, Falgun Sud
2nd, Sunday. It is based on one MSS. alone. No name is given at the
end. The name Gokulotsavaji, given here, is based merely on conjecture
arising from the known style of the author.
G. Vitthales’aji’s tikā is based on one MSS. It is not Gusaiji’s in any
case. It was obtained from Vallabhalalji’s collection. Hence it is
possible that Kaka Vallabhji’s father Vitthales’a was the author of this.
H. The Eighth is Purushottamaji’s. The text of this tikā is based on eight
MSS. Some of these were old and very good. One obtained from
Gaikwad’s Central Library collection of Baroda was an excellent copy.
One was dated 1787 samvat. Margas’īrsha Krishṇa 7th, Sunday.

EDITORS' NOTE.
I. Giridharaji's is the 9th. It was obtained with considerable difficulty from
Kankroli through Chhannulālaji of Bombay. The tīkā is in the collection
of the Saraswati Bhandar of S'rī Dwarkadhis'aji.
J. The 10th is Lalubhatta's. It is based on three very good and old MSS.
One dated 1800 st. Bhadra. sud. 12th, second dated 1876 st. Ashadha vad.,
third, written by one Vishnudāsa.
K. The 11th is nameless. This was obtained from Ranchhodlalji.
Nine out of these commentators are Vallabhacharya's direct agnate descendants.
Their acquaintance is already made in our previous publications. The other two
are also descendants of Vallabhacharya from daughters and they are known as
Bhattas or Lalajis.
We express our thanks to the Goswami Balakas, and learned gentlemen, and
Pandit Gattulalaji's institution, for the loan of the above-mentioned MSS., but
for whose kind cooperation we could not have collected so many tīkās. To our
knowledge no tīkā of Siddhanta Rahasya remains to be printed now. We hope
that learned Vaishnavas will study these and spread the noblest teachings of S'rī
Vallabha among Vaishnava masses.
With feelings of joy, we offer this fruit of our labour of love at the Lotus-Feet
of Lord S'rī Krishna.
