NOTES —एवमादिभिः—एव आदिः येषां ते एवमादयस्तैः
एवमादिभिः by this and others एव refers to ' sitting
amidst five fires , living only on water , sitting in
an unsheltered place in the rainy season' etc., i. e., the
kinds of penances mentioned in the previous verses.
व्रतै —नियमैः by austerities. मृणालिकापेलवं-मृणालिकामिव
(बिसतन्तुमिव) पेलवं (कोमलं as delicate as a lotus-fibre.
अहर्निशं—अहश्च निशा च अहर्निशं day and night It is a
समाहार द्वन्द्व compound (which implies an aggregate or
the things enumerated in which constitute a complex
idea) It is always singular and neuter. ग्लपयन्ती—
(√ग्लै+णिच्+शतृ) causal (णिजन्त) present part. of
√ग्लै ' to be weary' श्रान्तं नयन्ती wearing तपस्विनां—
(तपस्+घिनिः) मुनीनां of other ascetics उपार्जितं (उप+
√अर्ज्+क्तः) संपादितं, सञ्चित lit acquired, practised.
दूर—अत्यर्थं distant, far, far away It is an adverb to
अधश्चकार—तिरश्चकार made low i e., excelled or
surpassed Even with her delicate frame Parvati
performed such penances as were very much
superior to those practised by other ascetics possessed
