besides this—the things enumerated in the first three
lines of the verse तपः फलं—तपसः फलं the fruit of
penance
Shiva means to say that Parvati being already
in possession of all those things, namely noble birth,
excessive beauty, happiness of wealth and young
age, for the acquisition of which people generally
resort to practise penance, he failed to understand
the cause of her penance and so asked the
question 41.
CHANGE OF VOICE :—प्रथमस्य वेधसः कुले प्रसृत्या
( भूयते ), वपुषा त्रिलोकसौन्दर्येण इव उदितेन ( भूयते ), ऐश्वर्य-
सुखेन अमृग्येन ( भूयते ), वयसा नवेन ( भूयते ), अतः परं केन
तपः फलेन भूयेत इति ( त्वया ) उच्यताम् ॥ ४१ ॥
HINDI TRANSLATION :—( मनुष्य जाति के ) प्रथम
उत्पादक ब्रह्मा के वंश में ( तुम्हारा ) जन्म है, शरीर मानो तीनों
लोकों की सुन्दरता एकत्रित हो गई हो, सम्पत्ति का सुख
(तुम्हें) ढूँढना नहीं, आयु नई है, तो बताओ तो इससे बढ़ कर
और क्या तपस्या का फल हो सकता है ? ॥ ४१ ॥
ENGLISH TRANSLATION —( Thy ) birth is in the
family of Brahman, the first creator ; body is as if it
were the manifestation of the ( collected ) beauty of the
three worlds , happiness of affluence need not be
sought after ( by thee ), age is fresh Then, please
tell what else than these can be the fruit of
penance ? 41
