About this granth

The Aitareya Aranyaka (ऐतरेयारण्यकम्) is the forest-text of the Aitareya branch of the Rigveda, following the Aitareya Brahmana. Tradition credits its first three books to Mahidasa Aitareya. It deals with the Mahavrata day of the soma ritual, the recitations performed on it and their inner meaning. Chapters four to six of the second book form the Aitareya Upanishad, and the third book, the Samhita Upanishad, reflects on the forms of Vedic recitation.

The text is divided into five aranyakas, each split into adhyayas and khandas. This edition prints it with the Sanskrit commentary of Sayanacharya, who explains its ritual terms and Vedic words.

The scanned title page identifies it as number 38 of the Anandashrama Sanskrit Series, revised by Babashastri Phadke and published by Hari Narayan Apte from the Anandashrama press, Pune, in Shaka 1820 (1898). A list of the manuscripts used for the text precedes it. The copy has 304 pages.
