Here, there is a vertical bar, and... wait! Look at the top:
Is it ी with an accent? Or is it ौ?

In Sanskrit: "तन्मेऽराधि" followed by "इति" becomes "तन्मेऽराधीति"!

PREFACE.

In preparing the text of this second volume of the Baudhāyana-
śrautasūtra the editor has had to cope with many more difficul-
ties than he had to do when preparing the text of the first
volume. Indeed, a few months ago I was almost despairing of
obtaining sufficient material for this volume. The fact is, that
the tradition of these parts of the sūtra, describing for the greater
part the rituals, partly obsolete, partly less observed than the
darśapūrṇamāsa, agnyādheya and agniṣṭoma, is, throughout
India, a very bad one. The MSS. of Bombay, Benares,
Gwalior, Dhar and Ujjain are all together more or less corrupt and
seem partly to derive from one archetype, in which not only were
lost the right arrangement of the materials and the numbering of
the praśnas, adhyāyas and khaṇḍikās, but the text of which
was also hopelessly corrupt in many a passage. And no com-
plete copy of Bhavasvāmins Vivaraṇa, which would have been of
paramount use, seems to be extant. Although Professor
Hultzsch has taken all possible pains to hunt up more MSS. from
Southern India and has set to work two pandits to unearth
more material, he has, alas, not succeeded. Professor Bhandar-
kar of Elphinstone College also was kind enough to provide me
with more material, but it was of the same kind: on the whole
corrupt from beginning to end.
Nearly despairing, I wrote to Dr. Thomas, Librarian-in-Chief
to the India Office, requesting him to look over, for my sake, once
more the Mackenzie Collection of Sanskrit MSS. preserved at the
India Office. And he was so fortunate as to light upon one MS.
(cp. infra the enumeration of the MSS.) containing a wholly
independent tradition of the text I stood in need of so much.
This MS., too, is far from faultless, but it throws light on many a
difficult passage, and, what is the main point, the arrangement of
the praśnas seems to be correct in this MS. Before I knew
this Mackenzie MS., I had my doubts about which part of the
sūtra constituted the so-called uttarā tatiḥ. In the MS. from
Benares, where the praśnas are all numbered by a secunda manus
(cp. my paper "Ueber das rituelle Sūtra des Baudhāyana," p. 12),
the praśna coming after the dvādaśāha and gavām ayana, num-
bered here as the 17th, contains the atirātra, the sautrāmaṇī and
the ekādaśinī. In the copy of Bhavasvāmins Vivaraṇa, known to
me from the beginning up to the aupānuvākya (consequently
giving the first fourteen praśnas complete), is found neither the
aśvamedha nor the dvādaśāha and gavām ayana, but immedi-
ately after the aupānuvākya comes the ekādaśinī. Now, as the
MS. of Bhavasvāmin ends with the words: iti bhavasvāmikṛte

ii PREFACE.
kalpavivaraṇe tatau dvitīyo 'dhyāyaḥ, and the Mackenzie MS. agrees
exactly with this numbering, as it gives the number dvitīyaḥ
precisely at the end of the passage treated lastly by Bhavasvāmin,
there is no doubt at all that the Mackenzie MS. is right and that
the uttarā tatiḥ begins with the atirātra and the immediately
following ekādaśinī. This being the case, the statement of B
and Be, that the 17th praśna should have contained the
atirātra, sautrāmaṇī and ekādaśinī must be false. On account of
the fact that the Mackenzie MS. agrees in this respect with
Bhavasvāmin and that in other points this MS., of all those
known to me, also seems to have preserved the correct order, I
have adopted the arrangement of the materials as given by this
MS. In consequence of this arrangement, the one adopted pre-
viously has been abandoned: thus the numbering of the praśnas
and partially that of the adhyāyas in the text coming after the
gavām ayana is wholly different from the numbering followed by
me in citing passages from Baudhāyana in my above paper on this
sūtra. But however valuable this Mackenzie MS. may be, it has
not cleared up all the dubia regarding the arrangement of the mate-
rials. There are two more points to be settled. The first is a ques-
tion analogous to a difficulty in the construction of the text of Vol. I
(the place where the pravargya had to be put in), viz., the place
to be assigned to the Kāṭhakasūtra. In the MSS. from Benares
(Be) and Bombay (B) it is numbered as the 18th, in the MS.
Haug it is numbered as the 21st. The Mackenzie MS. assigns a
place to this praśna between the agnicayana and the vājapeya,
without, however, giving a praśna-number to it.¹ As the con-
tents of this praśna are mentioned neither in the Dvaidha- nor in
the Karmāntasūtra, no further information is to be obtained from
these texts. But as it is highly improbable that this praśna
should have formed part of the uttarā tatiḥ, the number 18 assign-
ed to it by Be and B can by no means be right. In accordance
with the MS. Haug,² and with the place occupied by this
material in the brāhmaṇa (viz., at the end of the Taitt. Brāhm.)
I have inserted it after the uttarā tatiḥ. In consequence of this
new arrangment the numbers of the following praśnas (Dvaidha,
Karmānta and Prāyaścitta) will have to be changed accordingly.
By doing so I may come into collision with the original number-
ing, which, it seems, is unknown to us. But this is a point of
minor importance.
Another question has also puzzled me greatly. In the uttarā
tatiḥ, as handed down to us in the Mackenzie MS., two

¹ Praśna numbers are not found in the Mack. MS.
² This MS. gives as the number of the Kāṭhakapraśna : 21; the same MS.
numbers the three Karmāntapraśnas : 22, 23, 24; and the Dvaidhapraśnas : 25,
etc. This is obviously an error (cp. my paper on the Baudh. sūtra, p. 13, 14)
But at any rate this MS. inserts the Kāṭhaka immediately before Dvaidha and
Karmānta.

PREFACE. iii
adhyāyas are found, the contents of which are entirely foreign to a
śrautasūtra, viz. the adhyāyas 12 and 13 of praśna 17, treating
of the samāvartana, a subject we would expect to be treated
rather in the gṛhyasūtra. Now, the tradition of the gṛhyasūtra is
in this respect not wholly consistent either. Most of the MSS.
of the gṛhyasūtra have in the gṛhyasūtra proper (second praśna)
a chapter commencing thus : vedam adhītya snāsyann ity uktam
samāvartanam, and in the so-called paribhāṣā-sūtra a chapter
commencing : vedam adhītya snāsyann ity upakalpayate, etc. This
last part is identical with the long passage found in the Mackenzie
MS. of the śrautasūtra and here inserted as adhyāya 12 of the
first uttarā tatiḥ praśna. This distribution of the material in the
MSS. of the gṛhyasūtra cannot possibly be right, for obviously
the passage vedam adhītya snāsyann ity uktam samāvartanam refers
to the passage vedam adhītya snāsyann ity upakalpayate, which
therefore must have preceded. I possess a very good copy in
Grantha writing of the whole gṛhyasūtra, kindly procured me by
Professor Hultzsch. In this MS. the long passage commencing :
vedam adhītya snāsyann ity upakalpayate (the passage given by
the Mackenzie MS. as forming part of the śrautasūtra) stands
where the chapter vedam adhītya snāsyann ity uktam
samāvartanam is inserted by the other MSS. Before the
Mackenzie MS. came into my hands I thought this was all right.
But not long ago I received one more copy of the gṛhyasūtra,
copied from an original preserved at Madras. This MS. throws
some light on this hitherto obscure point. Where the other MSS.
(except the one from Madras, designed by me as M) have the
chapter vedam adhītya snāsyann ity uktam samāvartanam, this MS.
reads : vedam adhītya snāsyann ity uktam samāvartanam; asya
samāvartanasya nātra pāṭhaḥ, kimtu anyatra paṭhitam; atra
samgṛhya vilikhitam atropayogāt; then comes the text given by
Mackenzie as xvii. 12 and 13, and the rest of the chapter vedam
adhītya snāsyann ity uktam samāvartanam. Now, as it is impos-
sible that the passage referred to in the opening words ity uktam
samāvartanam could have followed, it seems highly probable that
the treatment of the samāvartana was originally incorporated in
the uttarā tatiḥ, and that here the Mackenzie MS. is right too.
I possess now another copy of the complete gṛhyasūtra, which
confirms this statement. This MS. gives in the second praśna the
chapter vedam adhītya snāsyann ity uktam samāvartanam, but in the
paribhāṣā the text given by the Mackenzie MS. (as xvii. 12, 13)
is not found. It is not improbable that the scribes of our śrauta-
sūtra, finding the treatment of the samāvartana foreign to a
śrautasūtra, omitted it and inserted it in a more proper place (the
gṛhyasūtra), disturbing, in doing sō, the first praśna of the uttarā
tatiḥ. For it is remarkable that none of all the other MSS. of the
śrautasūtra give for this praśna (the 17th) any adhyāya- or
khaṇḍikā-number; the Mackenzie MS., on the other hand, gives
the adhyāya- and khaṇḍikā-numbers, and, in accordance with this

iv PREFACE.
fact, at the close of this praśna, all the pratīkas of the adhyāyas
and khaṇḍikās, including those of the chapters on samāvartana.
How it occurred to the diasceuasts of the śrautasūtra to insert the
samāvartana among the subjects treated in the śrautasūtra, I am,
however, at a loss to explain.
So this Mackenzie MS. was of the greatest help in constituting
the text of Vol ii. The tradition of the cayana, vājapeya and
rājasūya chapters is in this MS. inferior to that of the following
chapters. To these, however, it is of the greatest value : entire
passages, omitted by all the other MSS., are found here, and in
many a passage it is easy to prove that only the reading found in
M. (Mackenzie) is right, over against the oftentimes unanimous
reading of all the other MSS. As no complete copy of the Vivaraṇa
seems to be available, we are thrown upon our own resources to
understand the meaning of this text. Of some use are, of course, the
cognate texts of Āpastamba and Hiraṇyakeśin, but, as these are
much more real sūtras than the text of Baudhāyana, and conse-
quently, on the whole, much shorter, the help procured from these
texts is rather inefficient. In passages, where new words or
unknown expressions occur, I have, therefore, as a rule, adhered
to the reading of M. The corruption of the other MSS. is so
great, that it is not worth while mentioning all their various
readings. So, e.g., in the description of the vrātyastomas : here
the text of all the MSS., with the exception of M., is one hopeless
confusion. It is highly to be regretted, that this Mackenzie MS.
is not wholly complete : some final leaves are wanting ; conse-
quently the text of the important last chapters of the second
uttarātatīḥpraśna had to be edited as well as possible after the
corrupt MSS. This is all the more to be regretted as they contain
the legends of Purūravas and Uśanas.
After the above remarks, the reader and student of the second
volume of Baudhāyana will be indulgent to the editor, who
thought it better to give a text, however imperfect, rather than
postpone its publication ad calendas graecas, as, after years of
inquiry, no more help seemed to be forthcoming.
After these preliminary remarks, I shall now give a list of
the MSS. used in editing Vol. ii.

  1. M, being No. xxviii. (new number : 92) of the Mackenzie
Collection at the India Office, see Wilson, a descriptive catalogue of
    the Oriental MSS. collected by Lt.-Col. Mackenzie, Vol. i., p. 6 ;
old palmleaf MS. in Nandināgarī characters, 44 c.m. long, 2½ large,
well-written but slightly injured ; the pagination is continuous. It
    contains the following parts :—
    (a) karmāntasūtra, one leaf numbered 2 and containing Karm.
i., kh. 3 from : ° ta āvāpo bhavati taṃtram tu unto jagatīti, close of
kh. 5 ; then on 20 leaves numbered 21-41, the rest of the Kar-
mānta, beginning praśna ii., kh. 27, from : ° bṛhaspatibhyāṃ tvā
juṣṭam unto the end of the Karmānta.
    (b) śulbasūtra foll. 42-50 a.

(c) cayanasūtra foll. 50a-72.
(d) kāṭhakasūtra foll. 73-77.
(e) vājapeya foll. 78-83.
(f) rājasūya foll. 83-93.
(g) iṣṭikalpa foll. 94-105.
(h) aupānuvākya foll. 106-122.
(i) aśvamedha foll. 123-137.
(k) dvādaśāha foll. 137-148.
(l) uttarā tatiḥ (first praśna) foll. 149-168.
(m) ekāhas (sec. praśna) foll. 168-182.
The MS. breaks off after the 10th adhy. of praśna xviii.
2. B. cp. Preface to Vol. i., p. vii.
3. Be (Be 115) cp. ib. p. vii, viii.
4. U, being a nearly complete collection of the Baudh.-sūtras,
neatly written on paper in Nāgarī by the same hand. From Ujjain.
The avāntaradīkṣā is not found in this collection. It contains on
158 leaves (numbered continuously) the contents of Vol. i. ; the
pravargya comes after the agniṣṭoma ; it closes with kh. 17. Then
come the agnicayana, vājapeya, etc. No praśna numbers are
given here and in the following parts, which are all numbered
separately; its colophon runs : śake 1762 bhādrapada kṛṣṇa 2
ravivāsare taddine āṭhavele ity upanāmakagaṇeśabhaṭṭātmajarāma-
candreṇa likhitam. Through the kind mediation of Professor
Bhandarkar I was allowed the use of this MS.
MSS. containing single parts :—
5. H cp. Preface to Vol. i., p. viii. : cayana, vājapeya, ati-
rātra, aptoryāma, ekādaśinī, kāṭhaka, and sautrāmaṇī.
6. F cp. Preface to Vol. i., p. ix. (vājapeya).
7. D, being a collection of various parts of the sūtra found at
Dhar, the loan of which was procured to me also by Professor
Bhandarkar. Paper, Nāgarī writing, different handwriting. It
contains the iṣṭikalpa in a rather good tradition, although badly
written; the dvādaśāhapraśna, atirātra, uttarā tatiḥ, very badly
written and in the same hopelessly corrupt tradition as the other
MSS.
8. Tr, being a copy in Grantha writing on paper from an origin-
al in Trichinopoly, pretending to be a complete śrautasūtra (!). It
contains : the whole of the text already published in Vol. i. ; the
pravargya, together with its prāyaścitta and the avāntaradīkṣā,
precedes the agniṣṭoma. After the agniṣṭoma come : 1. cayana
(foll. 225-276); 2. sautrāmaṇī (foll. 277-282); 3. vājapeya (foll.
282-297); 4. atirātra (foll. 297-305); 5. aptoryāma (foll.
305-306); 6. the three prāyaścitta praśnas (foll. 306-343). The
praśna numbering of this copy is utterly worthless.
9. MS, being the sūtra passages of the cayana as found in the
mahāgnisarvasva, in Grantha writting on palmleaves, belong-
ing to the India Office (cp. Burnell, a catalogue of Sanskrit MSS.,
Part i., p 27); MSc., the reading presented by the Mahāgnisar-
vasva commentary itself.

vi PREFACE.
10. Bu, the text of the cayana as given in an appendix after
the above mentioned MS. (Burnell 55), comprising the text up to
kh. 24, breaking off after the words: nihanty āvṛhyāśmānam upa.
11. Be 11, cp. Preface to Vol. i., p. x., No. 9: dvādaśāha
(without gavām ayana), rājasūya, vājapeya.
12. T, cp. Preface to Vol. i., p. x., No. 12: rājasūya only.
Of the rājasūya MSS. B Be and U agree mostly; on the other hand
Be 11 and T go together. M is independent.
13. Be 8, cp. Preface to Vol. i., p. x., No. 10 (here cited as
B 4) contains the iṣṭikalpa.
14. Be, a copy of the aupānuvākya praśna from Benares
(Nāgarī, paper) on 14 foll., well-written but containing on the
whole the same tradition as B and Be (115).
15. Be, a copy of the kāṭhakasūtra from Benares (see sūcipat-
tra, p. 72, No. 10), paper, Nāgarī, 7 leaves.
16. Be (12), a copy of the atirātra from Benares (see sūcipat-
tra, p. 72, No. 12), paper, Nāgarī, 3 leaves.
17. G, an original MS. of the aupānuvākya from Gwalior on
paper in Nāgarī, procured on loan by Professor Bhandarkar.
18. T, a copy of the sautrāmaṇi in the collection of Sanskrit
MSS. preserved at Tübingen (M.a. i., 317) Nāgarī, paper.
19. MS and MSc, text and commentary of the ekādaśinīsūtra
contained in the MS. of the Mahāgnisarvasva, cp. supra No. 9.
Other sources, which were of more or less help, are the Viva-
raṇa of Bhavasvāmin up to the aupānuvākya, the Vivaraṇa of
the atirātra, the aptoryāma and the sautrāmaṇi, and lastly the
Prayogasāra of Keśavasvāmin on the contents of which cp. my
paper on the Baudh.-sūtra, p. 15.
My thanks are due, for procuring me the use of some of these
MSS. and for taking pains in having copied others for me, to Dr.
Thomas, Librarian-in-Chief of the India Office, to Professor
Hultzsch, to Professor Bhandarkar at Bombay, to Mr. A. Venis
at Benares, and to the British Government, which enabled me to
collate some of the originals of the above mentioned manuscripts.

्यासे"? No, "अन्त्यासे" (in the end/border).
What is "गम्य"? No, could it be "शम्या"?
Wait! Look at the first letter of that word!
Is it 'ग' or 'श'?
LOOK AT IT!
It's 'श'!!
Look at line 1: "शालां" -> no, line 1 has "रशने". Line 7 has "शालां".
Look at "शालां": the first letter of "शालां" is 'शा'.
Now look at the word after "शालां":
It has 'श'! No, wait!
Does it have a loop at top-left like 'श'?
No, look at 'श' in "शर्करा" (line 4): round top loop.
In this word in line 7:
The letter has two vertical parts?
Wait! It's "शम्यान्त्यासे"!
A shamya-fall! A shamya-throw! "शम्याप्रासे"???
Wait! Is it "शम्याप्रासे"?
Look at:
Letter 1: श (sha)
Letter 2: म्या (myaa)
Letter 3: प्रा (praa) or न्त्या (ntyaa)?
Wait! "शम्याप्रासे"! "śamyāprāse" - at the distance of a shamya-throw!
YES! "शम्याप्रासे"!
That is one of the most
