About this granth
Raghuvamsha (रघुवंशम्) is Kalidasa's mahakavya in nineteen cantos on the kings of the Solar dynasty, from Dilipa to the dissolute Agnivarna. It is counted among his most mature poems and has been a core text of Sanskrit education for centuries.
Its well-loved episodes include Dilipa's service of the cow Nandini, Raghu's conquest of the quarters and his gift to the student Kautsa, the svayamvara of Indumati and Aja's lament at her death, the story of Dasharatha and then of Rama, Kusha's resettling of Ayodhya and the decline of the line under Agnivarna.
This is No. 40 of the Chaukhamba Surbharati Granthamala, in its fifth edition of 1994. It prints the verses with Mallinatha's classic Sanskrit commentary Sanjivani and the Chandrakala Hindi commentary of Dr. Shrikrishnamani Tripathi, former head of the department of Purana-Itihasa, culture and geography at Sampurnanand Sanskrit University, Varanasi. With text, Mallinatha's analysis and plain Hindi together, the 735-page volume serves both students and lovers of poetry.
