संमोह that can draw the mind but it must be either the
boy or his qualities that will do so The reading ‘संमोहेऽस्थिरमपि’
is better In that case एष बलवान् can be construed with
महिम्नामतिशय, which can very well be said to attract the mind,
though it has grown dull and motionless through bewilder-
ment संमोहेन स्थिरम् The bewildered mind (and therefore
slow to move) can well be compared to a mass of iron
The boy एष in whom the excess of greatness is seen will
well correspond with a small piece of lodestone It can
hardly be said that संमोह resembles a piece of lodestone
अज्ञातानि नामानि क्रम अभिजन च येषाम् whose names order
of precedence and birth I do not know क्रम -सत्कारायानु-
पूर्वम् अभिजन -birth family 'कुलान्यभिजनान्वयौ इत्यमर मनु
lays down that a young student must rise to receive old persons
and should salute them 'शय्यासनेऽध्याचरिते श्रेयसा न समाविशेत् । शय्या-
सनस्थश्चैनं प्रत्युत्थायाभिवादयेत् ॥' मनु० II 119 लव did not know
whether all were Brāhmanss or क्षत्रियस The salutation would
differ in that case All he knew was that they were पूज्य, being
old पूज्यानप्रति सः though they are to be honoured by me
स्वन is a misprint for शत अविरुद्ध प्रकार a mode (of saluta-
tion) that is unobjectionable गौतम lays down that it is not
necessary to salute everyone in an assembly separately एष
पर्याय here is a salutation of Lava to you all according to your
rank and order पर्याय succession regular order Compare ‘एष
वो रामशिरसा प्रणामपर्याय' महावीर० IV न सम्पूर्ण not only is my
lap filled (by लव sitting upon it) but my desire also is fulfilled
after a long time अरुन्धती on hearing that सीता was pregnant had
longed to place her child on her lap Twelve years passed
away before the desire was fulfilled दरविकसद् यद् नीलोत्पल तद्वद्
श्यामल अङ्गबन्ध दर कान्तेन (अनुहरति) resembles (Rāma) in the
frame of his body which is dark and brilliant like the blue lotus
that is slightly expanding दर adv a little 'दराल्पेऽर्थे मनागपि'
मेदिनी कषायिता (भक्षिता) अरविन्दकेसरा वैकषाय कण्ठ यस्य स बकवरि-
कण्ठः कण्ठेषु तस्य नाद इव दीर्घदीर्घ तेन-(voice) which is as pene-
trating (lit very long) as the note of a swan whose throat has
been rendered astringent (कषाय) by eating the filaments of
lotuses. ननु वत्सस्य Indeed the touch of this boy's body soft
(पद्मक) like the interior of a full-blown (कटोर) lotus is like
that (of Rāma's body) चिबुकम् the chin सबाष्पम् with tears
and wonder साकूतम् wonder feeling निपुणम् adv closely,
carefully संदधात्येव does resemble उन्मत्तीभूतमिव as if gone mad
