Ignorant people, not knowing the true nature of the soul,
maintain that the Self is but the non-self, and some uniformed
people even say that the soul is identical with passions such as
attachment and that it is indistinguishable from the karmic
matter. Some others say that the psychic potency which
determines the high or low intensity of passions, and their
consequent effect on the conscious state, is the soul. Still others
regard the soul as the quasi-karmic matter (nokarma). Some
consider the fruition of karma as the soul and some consider the
sensation resulting from the strength of the fruition – intense or
mild – as the soul. Some believe that jīva and karma, taken
together, constitute the soul, and some others consider the soul
to be the result of the association of karma. In these and many
other ways, ignorant people identify the Self with the non-self.
Such absolutists are ignorant of the truth; say those who know
the ultimate point of view.
