FOREWORD
Swami Dwarika Das Shastri, Acharya is a finished
scholar. He is doing yeoman's service to the cause of
salvaging our ancient cultural heritage. He has edited
the Mādhavīyā Dhātuvṛtti, the Nyāsa and the Pada-
mañjarī on the Kāśikā and the Tattvasaṅgraha of Śānta-
rakṣita with Kamalaśīla's Pañjikā, which were long out
of print. I am happy to be able to record my unqualified
appreciation of the consummate scholarship and technical
skill, which he has brought to bear on the edition of these
abstruse texts. A discerning student will find in them
unmistakable evidence of his mastery of the language and
the logical subtleties of the arguments which make these
works a bugbear to ease-loving and superficial students.
The editor has established his title to our undying gratitude.
He is now bringing out a new critical edition
of Dharmakīrti's Pramāṇavārttika with Manorathanandin's
commentary. This is the only commentary which gives
an intelligible interpretation of the entire work. It is
neither too prolix nor too concise. The first edition of the
text by the Late Paṇḍita Rāhula Sāṅkṛtyāyana was a
pioneer work and in consequence suffered from the imper-
fections natural to pioneering work. Swami Dwarika Das
Shastri has avoided these shortcomings and has given
us a dependable text. This is an achievement which has
been made possible by sedulous collation of texts and
critical understanding.
Students of Buddhist Philosophy were smarting
under the inevitable disappointment of having no access
to this magnum opus of Dharmakīrti. A scholar
who has no acquaintance with this philosophical classic
will be doomed to the charge of charlatanism. The present
