Mahârâja Sarvanâtha to the transfer, among private grantees, of two villages named
Vyâghrapallika and Kâcharapallika in the Maṇinâga pêṭha, for the purposes of a
temple of the goddess Pishṭapurikâdêvî at the town of Mânapura.
This town of Mânapura is possibly the modern Mânpur,¹ near the river Śôṇ,
about forty-seven miles in a south-easterly direction from Uchaharâ, and thirty-two
miles south-east of Kârîtalâî. And, if this identification is accepted, we have here another
item of evidence tending to connect the Mahârâjas of Uchchakalpa with the part of the
country in which their grants are found. But it is obviously not of as much force as the
two points to which I have previously drawn attention; viz. the existence of the inscription
of Hastin and Śarvanâtha on the pillar at Bhumarâ, No. 24 above, page 110; and the
mention of the river Tamasâ, in Śarvanâtha's grant of the year 193, No. 28 above, page
125, in such a way as to shew that he had actual territorial ownership over at any rate
a certain village on the northern bank of that river. As regards the present passage, it
is not so conclusive, because a Mahârâja might very well make a grant of land within his
territory to a temple outside it. At the same time, that temple would not be far distant
from his own domains.

⁴ This visarga is imperfect, only the upper part of it having been engraved.
⁵ The stroke at the bottom of this nda, which gives it somewhat of the appearance of ndra,
seems to be due to a slip of the engraver’s tool.
