बृहद्देशी (मतंग मुनि - राग-पद्धति का विश्व में सर्वप्रथम प्रतिपादक ग्रन्थ)

P R E F A C E.
Bṛhaddeśī is a work on music by "Sage Mataṅga".
From (1) “मतङ्गस्य वच श्रुत्वा नारदो मुनिरब्रवीत्” (p 1) and (2)
“श्रीमन्मतङ्गमुनिः प्राह मुनीनुद्दिश्य तत्तथा ।” (p. 141) it would appear
that Mataṅga composed this at the instance of Nārada and
other sages. That Mataṅga was the author is shown by such
colophons as “इति मतङ्गमुनिविरचितबृहद्देश्यां प्रबन्धाध्यायः षष्ठः ।”. We
know nothing of the date of its composition or the parti-
culars of the life of the author Mataṅga. Kālidāsa however
mentions in his Raghuvaṁśa¹ a sage Mataṅga who cursed
the Gandharva named Priyamvada who might have been
arrogant of his skill in music. If this Mataṅga is identical
with the present author, then we may take him to be a
Puranic celebrity anterior to the kings of the Raghu line
dealt with by Kālidāsa. Mataṅga is also referred to in the
Rāmāyaṇa², the Mahābhārata³, and in the Mātaṅgalīlā⁴ No.
10 of the Trivandrum Sanskrit Series; but the question
whether he is the same as the author of the present work has
to be determined in the light of further research on the
subject.

4 “धाता यक्षमरासुरामररुषः सङ्गृह्य वाणीव या
सृष्ट्वा द्वा विशिरा कदापि विधिना दाप्ताय दुर्धर्षतः ।
तस्मात् सा वशुकन्यका गुणवती नाम्नामवद् भार्गवात्
सैषाचाधममागता बत मतङ्गस्यातिकौतूहलात् ॥”
