थोड़े ही दिनों के बाद सर जॉन शोर को पता चला (?) कि
अवध की मसनद आसफ़ुद्दौला का एक भाई सआदतअली, जो
का नीलाम उस समय बनारस में रहता था, उसके बेटे
वज़ीरअली की निस्बत अवध की गद्दी का ज़्यादा
हक़दार है। मेजर बर्ड, जो कुछ दिनों बाद लखनऊ में असिस्टेण्ट
रेज़िडेण्ट था, लिखता है—
“सर जॉन शोर यह देख कर कि पिछले वज़ीर के एक भाई के साथ
ज़्यादा अच्छा सौदा किया जा सकता है, बनारस पहुँचा। वहाँ पहुँच कर
उसने सआदतअली के सामने यह तजवीज़ पेश की कि कम्पनी की मदद से
आप वज़ीरअली को गद्दी से उतार दीजिये, इस साफ़ शर्त पर कि आप साढ़े
पचपन लाख सालाना की रक़म को खूब बढ़ा दें और उसके अलावा
कम्पनी की सहायता के बदले में हमें और धन व सम्पत्ति दें। इस साफ़
और निर्लज्ज शर्त पर नवाबी का इच्छुक ख़ुशी से राज़ी हो गया। लखनऊ
पहुँच कर × × × वज़ीरअली को उतार दिया गया और २१ जनवरी सन्
१७९८ को उसकी जगह सआदतअली के नवाब बनाए जाने का एलान कर
दिया गया।”*

• "Seeing that a better bargain could be made with a brother of the
  deceased Wazir, Sir John Shore repaired to Benares, and proposed to the
  latter, who was named Saadat Ali, to dethrone Wazir Ali, offering the
  support of the Company on the intelligible condition that the subsidy should
  be largely increased, and that their support should be paid for otherwise in
  money and kind. To this sitpulation, bold and bare-faced the aspirant to
  the Princedom 'cheerfully consented,' and, after a preliminary process at
  Lucknow, termed in the 'Parliamentary Return of Treaties' 'a full investi-
  gation,' and purporting to be an enquiry into the spuriousness of Wazir
