बंगाल के बल्कि आमतौर पर भारत के अन्दर अंगरेज़ों की उस
समय की योजनाओं का यह ख़ासा सुन्दर और सच्चा चित्र है।
इस पत्र से यह भी साबित है कि अंगरेज़ इस समय बंगाल में
मीर जाफ़र और मीरन दोनों के खिलाफ़ दूसरी बग़ावत खड़ी करने
का फ़ैसला कर चुके थे।
मीरन एक समझदार युवक था। अंगरेज़ों की चालों और
[मीरन की दूर-] नीयत को वह इस समय तक ख़ासा पहचान गया
[दर्शिता] था। मीर जाफ़र भी इन लोगों की दोस्ती से
बेज़ार हो चला था। ख़ासकर मीरन अपने बाप
को अक्सर सलाह दिया करता था कि किसी तरह इन लोगों
के पंजे से निकलने की कोशिश की जावे। यही वजह थी कि क्लाइव
"मसनद पर मीरन को बैठने देना ख़तरनाक" समझता था।
क्लाइव के बाद "ब्लैक होल" के क़िस्से का गढ़ने वाला मश-
हूर गप्पी हॉलवेल कलकत्ते का गवर्नर नियुक्त हुआ। पाँच महीने
बाद जुलाई सन् १७६० में हेनरी वन्सीटार्ट ने उसकी जगह ली।
"But so large a sovereignty may possibly be an object too extensive for
a mercantile company: and it is to be feared they are not of themselves able,
without the nation's assistance, to maintain so wide a dominion. . . . It
is well worthy consideration, that this project may be brought about without
draining the mother country, as has been too much the case with our posses-
sions in America. A small force from home will be sufficient, as we always
make sure of any number we please of black troops, . . . I shall only
further remark, that I have communicated it to no other person but yourself;
nor should I have troubled you, Sir, but from a conviction that you will
give a favourable reception to any proposal intended for the public good."
