INTRODUCTION.
Kalyāṇamalla's Anaṅgaraṅga has been edited,
as far as I know twice in India, namely, (1) by Rāma-
candra Śāstrī, Lahore 1920, with a bhūmikā and a
small gloss, and (2) by Viṣṇuprasādabhaṇḍārin, Kāśī
1923 (=No. 9 of Haridās' Saṃskṛtagranthamālā), with
a short bhūmikā and useful notes. Nevertheless, the work
of Kalyāṇa thoroughly deserve our interest, because it is
one of the best कामशास्त्र texts written in the
language of the gods. It is by this reason that I have
undertaken the attempt to publish a new and, as I hope
a critical edition of the Anaṅgaraṅga. Rāmacandra
Śāstrī based his edition on one single manuscript and
in his Preface freely states that owing to circum-
stances his book is not perfect one.
Moreover there are in his edition a great many blunders
and no good readings. As for Viṣṇuprasādabhaṇḍārin's
edition, it is based upon Rāmacandra's text and three
manuscripts, only one of which is complete and शुद्धप्रायं,
as the editor himself says.
I copied first in 1899 the Berlin manuscript No.
595=Chambers 159 (Weber I, 172) i paper very much
damaged and text therefore mutilated. Signed B.
Then I collated the India Office manuscript No.
1801 (Eggeling's Catalogue, Vol. III, p. 361), fairly
written in Nāgarī. Signed IO.
Later on I copied the two Poona manuscripts
No. 204 and 238 (signed P 204 and P 238 respec-
tively) and R=Report...by Ramkrishna Gopal Bhandar-
kar, Bombay 1894, No. 317. Lastly I got, by the kind-
ness of Mr. F. W. Thomas and the Chief-Librarian of
the Madras Library, a most carefully prepared copy
and collation of the six manuscripts deposited there.
