About this granth
The Atharvaveda (अथर्ववेद) is one of the four Vedas. Besides ritual hymns it contains many verses concerned with everyday life: protection from disease, healing plants, the welfare of house and family, defence against enemies, marriage, kingship and praise of the earth, including the well-known Prithvi Sukta.
The introduction to this edition notes that Patanjali, author of the Mahabhashya, knew nine branches of the Atharvaveda, of which only a few, such as the Paippalada and Shaunaka, survive. The translation follows the Shaunaka recension, which the introduction describes as having 20 kandas, 731 suktas and 5,987 mantras. Each sukta is headed by its deity, for example the waters, Brihaspati, the rivers, plants, Brahmanaspati, the jangida amulet, Indra, the apamarga herb, and the house and its guardian, so the subject of each hymn is clear at a glance.
The Sanskrit mantras are accompanied by a simple Hindi rendering by Dr. Ganga Sahay Sharma. This is the 2015 edition of Sanskrit Sahitya Prakashan, New Delhi, part of its set of the four Vedas, and runs to 1063 pages.
हे अश्विनीकुमारो! स्तोता मनुष्य स्तुति के साथ ही अजमीढ के पुत्रों के समीप गए. इस
स्तोता को तुम इस के वीर्य से उत्पन्न होने वाले पुत्रों और पौत्रों के साथ दोनों लोकों में धन
प्रदान करो. (६)
इहेह यद् वां समना पपृक्षे सेयमस्मे सुमतिर्वाजरत्ना.
ऊरुष्यतं जरितारं युवं ह श्रितः कामो नासत्या युवद्रिक्.. (७)
हे अश्विनीकुमारो! इस यजमान को तुम ऐसी बुद्धि दो, जिस से यह तुम पर ही निर्भर
रहे तथा तुम इस स्तोता के रक्षक रहो. (७)
मधुमतीरोषधीर्द्याव आपो मधुमन्नो भवत्वन्तरिक्षम्.
क्षेत्रस्य पतिर्मधुमान्नो अस्त्वरिष्यन्तो अन्वेनं चरेम.. (८)
हमारे लिए आकाश मधुमय हो, अंतरिक्ष मधुमय हो, ओषधियां मधुमती हों तथा
क्षेत्रपति भी मधुमय हो. हम अमृतत्व को प्राप्त कर के उस के अनुगामी बन कर घूमें. (८)
पनाय्यं तदश्विना कृतं वां वृषभो दिवो रजसः पृथिव्याः.
सहस्रं शंसा उत ये गविष्टौ सर्वां इत् तां उप याता पिबध्यै.. (९)
तुम्हारा स्तोता और कर्म आकाश और पृथ्वी की कामनाओं की वर्षा करने वाला हो.
तुम सोमपान कर के गोपूजा वाले सैकड़ों स्तोत्रों को प्राप्त होते हो. (९)
