fields of agriculturists—all these were, in this terrible con-
flagration, burned to ashes. Even life was rendered
insecure. No one could be sure that the few morsels of
food which he was allowed to-day would be spared to him
to-morrow. The contrast between Swarajya and foreign
government, independence and slavery, stood naked in all
its horrible aspects before the people.
Thus did the English administer benevolently in this
extraordinary way these vast dominions of our Indian
princes which had been so far badly administered !
