Nargund, a Mahratta State near Dharwar, was the most
prominent among the places in Southern India that flared up in 1857.
The chief, Baba Saheb, disaffected owing to the right of adoption
being refused to him, had entered into a secret alliance with Nana
Saheb and had vowed to rise at the right moment. That moment
having arrived at the appointment of Mr. Manson as the Political
Officer, he declared war against the British on May 27, 1858. Mr.
Manson was killed in a skirmish at Sureban, a nearby village, and
his head was taken in a triumphal procession to Nargund and kept
hanging on the main gate of the fort. But soon on June 2, the
town and fort of Nargund was attacked and captured by Capt.
Malcolm. Baba Saheb fled in disguise, but was captured the next
day. His wife and mother drowned themselves in the Malaprabha
river. Baba Saheb was tried and executed at Belgaum on June 12.
He was valiant, generous and a patron of learning. He is still
remembered with reverence and pride in the whole of Karnatak.
