have to pack off tomorrow." But as an
official writes—"The real state of the case
was this: the Political Agent had full influ-
ence over Scindia's Diwan Dinkar Rao;
the minister in his turn influenced his
master; and thus Major Macpherson, from
the interior of the fort at Agra, ruled the
course of events at the Court of Gwalior."
The Scindia declined to join and the Revolu-
tionaries marched and captured Gwalior on
June 1, 1858. Dinkar Rao, with his master,
fled to Agra. The Revolutionaries ruled
at Gwalior for nearly eighteen days. The
British recaptured Gwalioron the 19th of
June and the Scindia was reinstated on the
throne. Later, Dinkar Rao much repented
his conduct, but that was too late.
