Newalkar, the ruler
of Jhansi and the
consort of Rani
Lakshmibai, ascen-
ded the gadi in 1838,
but actually gained
full powers in 1842.
He was an able
ruler and a great
patron of learning.
During his regime
the State attained a
high degree of pros-
perity. He died in
1853, childless, and
the State was an-
nexed by the British
on the pretext that
there was no direct
heir to the gadi.
This was done in
pursuance of Lord
Dalhousie's "Policy
of Annexation."
