In Memory of the Martyrs of the
Indian War of Independence of 1857
Martyrs, you have gone from us, but your spirits
are spurring us on to fulfil the mission of the lib-
erty of Mother India.
You seeming failure in the first struggle will
certainly urge us on to success. You taught us
how to give life for liberty. We respond to the
call of duty imposed on us by your blood sacrifice.
You have shown us that insincerity, treachery,
want of worthy leaders, want of concerted action
and unwillingness to sacrifice personal ambition on
the altar of service to the Mother Country caused
your failure.
You did not shed your blood in vain. We vow
to follow in the footsteps of Rani of Jhansi, the
Goddess of Liberty, that we will fight in every
possible way for India's liberty, even at the cost
of life. May 10, 1910

that of Rani Laksh-
mibai of Jhansi is,
in fact, not her pict-
ure, but that of
Sultan Jehan Begum
of Bhopal. This
was among the pic-
tures that were,
till then, being
represented abroad
as the Rani's, and
hence the mistake.
