seventy-five. years, was the titular .Emperor of Delhi
in 1857. After some outward hesitation, he agreed
to be the head of the Revolution and was proclaimed
sovereign of India. Revolutionary armies from all
quarters poured into Delhi, and for nearly four months
the City was in their hands. Later, it was stormed and
captured by the British troops.
On the capture of Delhi, Bahadur Shah fled from the
city with his family, but was eventually caught and made
to surrender. He was then publicly tried before a
military court and was sentenced, on March 9, 1858,
‘to be transported across the seas as a felon’. Accord-
ingly he was taken to Rangoon and thence to Tonghoo,
an inland station in Burma.
Bahadur Shah was a poet of considerable merit and
of a philosophical turn of mind.
