b. in the Kâṇva-Çâkhâ. — Not having yet discovered a complete and
correct copy of this Çâkhâ — three books are still wanting and some of the ma-
nuscripts of the other 14 books are rather incorrect — I could not venture to
give in my edition also the text of this Çâkhâ, especially as its differences from
the Mâdhyandina-Çâkhâ are so very numerous and important, you may look at
»the readings of almost every passage«, as well at the single words and their or-
thography or even accentuation as at the whole kaṇḍikâs and their number or
distribution. The best copy extant in Europe is in the collection of the Rev. Dr.
Mill, now deposited in the Bodleian library: it contains eleven kâṇḍas written
and accented by three different scribes (I. withont any date by the one: IV. V.
XIV. foll. 1-23a. Samvat 1651 by an other: II. VI. VII. X. XII. XIV. from
foll 23, b-48. XV. XVII. Samvat 1875 by the thirth). Other copies are extant
only (with the exception of the kâṇḍas I. and XVII.) in Paris: Bibl. Nat. D. 167.
