the Gāndhāra Grāma states that it is according to Nārada's
opinion —
Now this very definition is to be found in this Sangīta Maka-
randa of Narada as follows —
From these circumstances we must conclude that Sangita
Makaranda of Nārada is an older work than the Sangīta Ratnā-
kara and that it was known to S'ārṅgadeva (A D 1210-1247)
Until we get further proof to establish the exact date, we must
hold that Nārada, the author of Sangīta Makaranda lived some-
time in the interval between Mātṛgupta A D 550 and Sārṅga-
deva A D 1210-1247, that is, he must have lived between the
7th and 11th centuries

Source of the Manuscript—The present edition of the

The credit of having discovered this rare manuscript is due to
the wife of Mr R Ananta Krishna Shāstry, the officer employed
by the Baroda Central Library for search of Sanskrit manuscripts.
Mr Shāstry, while on an official tour in H E H. the Nizam's
Territory in 1919, was examining Mss in an old Pandit's house
at Gadwāl with his wife when the latter noticed this Ms
