PREFACE
This publication presents to the public the well-known
classic "Sangita Darpana" of Chatura Damodara, edited with
the help of four old manuscripts preserved in Saraswathi
Mahal Library. Though this work is universally accepted
as an authority on Music, especially in Northern India, no
satisfactory edition of the work has been available to the
public, and our publication is intended to supply the need
for such an edition.
The Editor, Sangita Kalasikhamani Sri K. Vasudeva Sastri,
has by his researches already thrown light on some
of the obscure points in our ancient texts dealing with the
essentials of melody and raga, and he has brought to bear
his deep knowledge of the subject and his critical acumen
in preparing this edition and the useful introductions in
English and Tamil. These latter are likely to help research-
students in understanding the history of the development
of our music. Our thanks are due to him for his valuable
services.
We are thankful to the Government of Madras for
their timely grants that have enabled us to publish this and
other valuable manuscripts of this Library.
