in several branches of learning. Therefore, if this Śrîdhara
(the author of the Triśatikâ) is the same Śrîdhara as the author
of the Nyâya-kandalî, then his mother was Avvokâ by name,
father Baladeva Śarma (by name), and his native place was
the village Bhûrisṛṣṭi, popularly known as Bhûriśreṣṭhika,
situated on the western bank of the river Ganges in the
district of Râḍhâ in Bengal.¹ Being a Bhaṭṭâcârya, he belonged
to Bengal and not to South India. Śrîdhara wrote the Nyâya-
kandalî at the request of Pâṇḍudâsa in the Śaka year 913
(=991 A.D.). As this Śaka makes him anterior to Bhâskara II
(who has quoted him), the above surmise is not impossible.
At the end of the Nyâya-kandalî, we have (the verse) :
त्र्यधिकदशोत्तरनवशतशाकाब्दे ९१३ न्यायकन्दली रचिता ।
श्रीपाण्डुदासयाचितभट्टश्रीश्रीधरेणेयम् ॥
(i.e., “In the Śaka year 913 was this Nyâya-kandalî composed,
at the request of Śrî Pâṇḍudâsa, by Śrî Śrîdhara.”)
This (verse) cannot be a composition of a pure philosopher.
Therefore my supposition that this Śrîdhara is the same as the
astronomer Śrîdhara² is not impossible.”
A few years later Śaṅkara Bâlakṛṣṇa Dîkṣita came
forward with a new and apparently more reliable argument
to prove that Śrîdharâcârya lived prior to 850 A.D., and not
in 991 A.D. as supposed by Sudhâkara Dvivedî.³ His
argument was that in a manuscript of the Gaṇita-sâra-saṅgraha
of Mahâvîra, in the collection of the late Dr Bhau Dâjî, there
occurred the rule
ऋणं (? धनं) घनर्णयोर्वर्गो मूले स्वर्णे तयोः क्रमात् ।
as a quotation from Śrîdharâcârya and some other rules
(vâkya) from the miśraka-vyavahâra of certain work by Śrîdhar-
âcârya, and so it was clear that Śrîdharâcârya was an earlier
writer than Mahâvîra. As this Mahâvîra had eulogised the
