44 DETERMINATIONS
Then, O merchant, take 3 paṇas and a half and quickly
give me one part of rice and two parts of mudga.
Solution. Dividing the rate-prices of mudga and rice by the corres-
ponding rate-quantities of those commodities, we get
9/7 and 2/1.
Multiplying these by the corresponding proportions in which they
are purchased (i.e., by 2 and 1), we get
18/7 and 2.
Now we apply the previous rule. Thus dividing 18/7 and 2 by their
sum, and multiplying them by the total price (i.e., 3½ paṇas), we get
63/32 and 49/32 paṇas
These are the prices of mudga and rice respectively.
The quantities of mudga and rice obtained for 63/32 paṇas and 49/32 paṇas
respectively can now be obtained by the rule of three. These come out to
be 49/32 kuḍavas and 49/64 kuḍavas respectively.
Ex. 75. ½ pala of asafoetida (hiṅgu), 2 palas of long
pepper (pippalī), and 7 palas of dry ginger (śuṇṭhī), are each
obtained for one rūpa. Give me equal quantities (of each
of them) for one rūpa.¹
Rule for finding the rates of purchase and sale when mer-
chants investing unequal capitals become equally rich by
purchasing and selling articles at the same rates :
60. Reduce the capitals (vitta) to a common denomina-
tor, and then remove the denominators. This being done,
the greatest amount increased by an optional number (1, 2, 3,
etc.) gives the rate of sale (i.e., the rate at which the
articles are sold for one rūpa ; vikraya).
That (i.e., the rate of sale) multiplied by the price at
which each remnant article is sold (antyārgha), being dimini-
