32 DETERMINATIONS
as also the fruit (i.e., interest), etc., as multiplied by the other
time by their sum, and then multiply them by the mixed
amount : then are obtained the capital etc. in their respective
order.¹
This rule is similar to the previous one.
Ex. 54. The rate of interest being 5 per cent per
month, the commission of the surety (bhāvyaka) 1 per cent per
month, the fee of the calculator (vṛtti) ½ per cent per month,
and the charges of the scribe ¼ per cent per month, a certain
sum amounts to 905 in a year. (Find the capital, the interest,
and the shares of the surety, calculator, and the scribe).²
Here argument = 100, time = 1 month, first fruit = 5, second
fruit = 1, third fruit = ½, fourth fruit = ¼ ; amount = 905, and other
time = 1 year, i.e., 12 months.
∴ Capital = (argument × time × amount) / [argument × time + (sum of fruits) × other time]
= (100 × 1 × 905) / [100 × 1 + (5 + 1 + ½ + ¼) × 12]
= 500.
Interest = (first fruit × other time × amount) / [argument × time + (sum of fruits) × other time]
= (5 × 12 × 905) / [100 × 1 + (5 + 1 + ½ + ¼) × 12]
= 300.
Commission of surety = (second fruit × other time × amount) / [argument × time + (sum of fruits) × other time]
= (1 × 12 × 905) / [100 × 1 + (5 + 1 + ½ + ¼) × 12]
= 60.
Similarly, fee of the calculator = 30, and charges of the scribe = 15.
Rule for finding the time in which a sum lent out at simple
interest will be paid back by equal monthly instalments :
49-50. To get the desired time (īpsitakālopanaye) sub-
tract from the capital (mūlāt) the present worths of the first
monthly instalment, the second monthly instalment, etc.,
