SALE OF LIVING BEINGS 29
Setting down the argument and requisition sides, we have
┌───┬───┐
│ 6 │ 9 │
│ 2 │ 1 │
│ 6 │ │
└───┴───┘
Transposing the prices of the commodities, we get
┌───┬───┐
│ 6 │ 9 │
│ 1 │ 2 │
│ 6 │ │
└───┴───┘
Now we have to apply the rule of five, etc. But the fruits (i.e. prices)
have been already transposed, and there are no denominators on any
side. Hence the required answer
6 × 1 × 6
= —————————
9 × 2
= 2 palas of long pepper.
Ex. 49. If 16 mangoes are obtained for 2 paṇas and
100 wood-apples for 3 (paṇas), say then how many wood-
apples will be obtained for 6 mangoes.¹
(29) Sale of living beings (jīva-vikraya)
Rule for problems on the sale of living beings :
46(ii). In (problems on) the sale of living beings, the
same rule (of five, etc.) is applied after transposing the ages
(of the living beings).²
Ex. 50. If 5 women of 16 years of age get 200, say
then, O mathematician, how much will 2 women of 20 years
of age get ?³
