even such statements as—
‘ adrāvatra prajvalatyagniruchchaiḥ
prājyaḥ prodyannul lasatyeṣa dhūmaḥ.’
[‘In this hill fire burns high, because there arises
thence a dense volume of smoke’],
where some of the Excellences, Floridity and the rest,
are present.—
Further, in such verses as the following—
‘This handsome woman represents the acquisition of
the Heaven in this human form, and the loveliness of her
lips puts nectar itself into the shade’,—
we find that it is regarded as ‘poetry’, through the
presence of the two Ornaments or Figures ‘Peculiar
Allegation’ and ‘Dissimilitude’, independently of the
presence of any excellences. 67.
The Author next proceeds to describe the varieties of
Excellences.—
Sweetness, Floridity and Lucidity—they are these three,
and not ten.
He states [one by one] the definition of each of these
three—
‘Sweetness’ is a source of delectability; it is what leads to
mollification in the case of the Erotic Passion. 68.
