Adh. CIV. Sl. 63-64.] चतुरधिकशततमोऽध्यायः 793
सवितृसुतदिने च कारयेन्महिष्यजोष्ट्रकृष्णलोहदासवृद्धनीचकर्म-
पक्षिचौरपाशिकान् व्युतविनयविशीर्णभाण्डहस्त्यपेक्षविघ्नकारणानि
चान्यथा न साधयेत्समुद्रगोऽप्यपां कणम् ॥६३॥
Dandaka 63.-b. On the day presided over by
Saturn, one ought to do work pertaining to the following
things in order to achieve success:--She-buffalo, goat,
camel, dark metal (iron); slaves, old persons, low-born
persons, birds, thieves, hunters, the immodest, broken pots,
elephant-catching and obstructionist-activities. Otherwise,
one will not get even a drop of water in the ocean.
This whole is in समुद्रदण्डक, which is ननरजरजरजरजरलगु-i. e., five
र Ganas having जगण in their middle and ल and गु at the end.
विपुलामपि बुद्ध्वा छन्दोविचितिं भवति कार्यमेतावत् ।
श्रुतिसुखदवृत्तसङ्ग्रहमिमममाह वराहमिहिरोऽतः ॥६४॥
Sloka 64.-Although one knows the extensive rami-
fications of the science of Prosody, one cannot do more
than this (cannot employ other varieties of metres).
Hence Varāhamihira has given this summary or essence
of metres that are pleasant to hear.
This is in विपुला, a kind of आर्या, which is of 3 kinds-(1)
मुखविपुला, (2) जघनविपुला and (3) महाविपुला. (1) When, in the first half
(i. e. between the first quarter and the 2nd) a word is broken
(2) when such a breaking occurs in the second half; (3) when
the break is in both the halves.
एकैव भवति पथ्या तिस्रो विपुलाश्रतस्र एवैताः ।
चपला भेदौस्त्रिभिरपि भिन्ना इति षोडशार्याः स्युः ॥
गीतिचतुष्टयमित्थं प्रत्येकं षोडशप्रकारं स्यात् ।
साकल्येनार्याणामशीतिरेवं विकल्पाः स्युः ॥
According to the commentator, Varahamihira has simpli-
fied the rules of Prosody and made them easily intelligible; besides
