About this granth

Betal Pachisi (बेताल पच्चीसी), 'twenty-five tales of the vetala', is one of India's most popular story cycles. It goes back to the Sanskrit Vetalapanchavimshati, a version of which appears in the Kathasaritsagara of the eleventh-century Kashmiri poet Somadeva. In the frame story King Vikramaditya, at a mendicant's request, sets out to carry a corpse inhabited by a vetala down from a tree in the cremation ground. On the way the vetala tells him a story ending in a riddle; when the king answers correctly, the vetala flies back to the tree, and so the cycle of twenty-five tales unfolds.

This book tells the stories in order, from Padmavati and the three young Brahmins to the parrot and the myna, Viravara, Somaprabha, Princess Anangarati, Madanasena, Jimutavahana, Unmadini, Chandrasvami, Anangamanjari and Manivarma, the four Brahmin brothers and the ascetic.

The title page credits the original to Somadeva Bhatta. The Hindi retelling is by Ved Prakash Soni with illustrations by Shankar Nayak, published by Jan Sahitya Parishad, Delhi, in 2002, and runs to 151 pages.
