Vedantasara (वेदान्तसारः) by Sadananda Yogindra is a compact manual of Advaita Vedanta that lays out the system in order, from the four preliminaries of study through ignorance, superimposition and its removal, to the great sayings and samadhi. It is widely used as a first book in Vedanta.
This edition is number 64 of the Parimal Sanskrit Series, second edition, Parimal Publications, Delhi, 2004. Its Chandrika Hindi commentary is by Dr. Rakesh Shastri, head of the Sanskrit department at Haridev Joshi Government Girls College, Banswara, with word division, translation, notes and diagrams.
A long introduction surveys Indian philosophy, the sources of Vedanta and fifty-seven Vedanta teachers and their works. The text then treats Prajna and Ishvara, the fourth state (turiya), the veiling and projecting powers, the subtle body of seventeen parts, quintuplication, the gross world, refutation of the Charvaka and other views, "Thou art That" and "I am Brahman", the two kinds of samadhi, and the person liberated while living.
वेदान्तसार वेदान्तदर्शन का प्रकरणग्रन्थ है। इसके 38 खण्डों में
ग्रन्थकार ने वेदान्तदर्शन के सिद्धान्तों का सरलरूप में प्रतिपादन मशरअमे का
प्रयास किया है। इससे पूर्व ब्रह्मसूत्रादि में प्रतिपादित वेदान्त के सिद्धान्तों को
समझना सामान्य व्यक्ति के लिए दुष्करकार्य हो गया था। इसीकारण आचार्य
सदानन्द ने वेदान्तसार की रचना की आवश्यकता अनुभव की जो अत्यन्त
लोकप्रिय हुई।
यहाँ 108 पृष्ठों की विस्तृत भूमिका में जहाँ वेदान्त-विषयक अनेक
जिज्ञासाओं का समाधान किया गया है। वहीं मूलग्रन्थ के रूप को सुरक्षित रखते
हुए विषय को स्पष्ट किया गया है। सरलता की दृष्टि से मुख्य खण्डों को
उपखण्डों में विभाजित किया गया है। प्रखण्डों के विभाजन में विषय-विशेष के
सर्वांगीण विवेचन की दृष्टि ही प्रमुख रही है।
पूर्व प्रतिपादित विषय को अग्रिम विषय के साथ जोड़ने के लिए
अवतरणिका, पुन: पदच्छेद एवं हिन्दी अनुवाद के बाद 'चन्द्रिका' हिन्दी
व्याख्या में विषय का सर्वांगीण एवं विस्तृत विवेचन प्रस्तुत किया गया है। साथ
ही विशेष शीर्षक में तत्सम्बन्धित अनेक महत्त्वपूर्ण विशेषताओं का उल्लेख
किया है। तत्पश्चात् उस खण्ड के अभिप्राय को डायग्राम बनाकर अध्येता
जिज्ञासु के लिए विषय को सहज हृदयंगम कराना ही मुख्य उद्देश्य है।
